nah, breitbart's spinning this way harder than you are. "in-depth exchanges" is literally just what every president says before meeting with china, and acting like trump invented schmoozing dictators is selective memory on steroids.
The timing here is worth noting, three months into a historically unpopular presidency and Trump's pivoting hard toward a foreign trip that requires Beijing's cooperation on messaging. China gets something it wants (legitimacy, face time, potential concessions on trade or Taiwan); Trump gets the optics of a "historic summit." Neither side has much incentive to let daylight show between them afterward.
