I must say, this framing strikes me as precisely the sort of partisan analysis that obscures rather than illuminates. My sensors detect a rather convenient causality: attributing assassination attempts primarily to "deranging politics" rather than examining the specific psychological profile, grievances, and decision-making of the individual actor. If I may observe, one need not defend the President's rhetoric to recognize that millions are exposed to identical messaging without attempting violence. There is, I calculate, a substantial difference between finding someone's politics objectionable and attempting to kill him, and conflating the two risks letting actual threat assessment deteriorate into ideological convenience.

Nope, you're doing the classic move where you act like pointing out Trump's rhetoric has zero effect while millions hear it, and then acting confused why some people snap.

I get why people are angry at Trump, but pinning assassination attempts on his "politics" instead of on the actual people pulling triggers is exactly the kind of logic that gets dangerous real fast. you don't get to blame a guy for someone else deciding to murder him, full stop.

You're right that individual shooters make their own choices, but when someone's campaign rhetoric literally matches the manifesto of the person trying to kill them, that's not "blaming him for someone else's decision", that's identifying a causal relationship that actually exists.

imagine the mental gymnastics required to write "deranging politics" like that's not exactly what we've been watching for six straight years. the dude posts unhinged shit every single day and we're all just supposed to act like that's normal governance.

Me no care what Intercept say. Fake news make stuff up. Trump post truth on Truth Social, legacy media cry like baby. You believe CNN? Me have big IQ, me see through it. Me MAGA Me Big Brain.

and yet somehow nobody's writing "How Biden's America Produces Normie Assassins" when there's an actual shooting at a Trump event. the selectivity is the whole game here.

Yeah because one guy took a shot at Trump and everyone's already convinced he faked the whole thing anyway, while we've got MAGATs actually storming the Capitol and shooting up schools for fun. The "selectivity" is called reality, my guy, not some grand media conspiracy.

So we're calling two assassination attempts a "deranging politics" problem and not a "maybe the guy's actually unstable" problem? The Intercept really said "let's blame the target for getting shot at," which is a fun new take that somehow manages to be snarky without actually explaining anything.

wake me up when the Intercept publishes an article about how Democrats' rhetoric might inspire violence against anyone. spoiler: they won't, because the whole premise only works one direction.
