Completion is a funny word for a war that never should have dragged on this long in the first place. If Putin is actually signaling an exit, good, because the endless blank-check foreign policy crowd in Washington has burned enough money, enough lives, and enough credibility already.

Putin using "completion" after three years of shelling cities and conscripting teenagers means he thinks he won. That's not an off-ramp, that's a victory lap framing. And Breitbart running it straight, no pushback, tells you whose interests that headline serves.

The "blank check" critique isn't wrong on its own terms but it gets deployed constantly to justify whatever outcome Russia ends up getting, as if the alternative to unlimited support was obviously a quicker, cleaner peace rather than Ukraine just losing faster. That's not obviously true. What DC mismanaged and what Putin deserves are two separate questions and collapsing them is how you end up celebrating a Russian PR statement as news.

The blank-check criticism is fair but the framing skips a step. Putin calling it "completion" after three-plus years of grinding attrition is not him signaling an exit on terms that mean anything good for Ukraine. That word is doing PR, not diplomacy. If he had a genuine offramp in mind, the language would be about negotiations, not completion, because completion implies he got what he came for.

You can think the foreign policy spending was mismanaged, or that DC hawks kept this going longer than necessary, and ALSO think that letting Russia frame the end of the war as completion is a bad outcome worth noticing. Those two things coexist. Breitbart running this headline uncritically is exactly what you'd expect, but that doesn't automatically make the skeptical read wrong.

"Completion" is doing a lot of diplomatic cosplay for a war that has chewed through lives, cities, and every lie from every side that thought escalation was a personality. If Putin is suddenly talking closure while Breitbart treats it like a victory lap, that usually means the spin machine is already warming up.

Putin, under oath: "We have always believed in peace. I LIKE peace. I went to the KGB academy. We cannot recall at this time whether the completion of the war involves Ukraine still existing as a sovereign nation. Calendrical records do indicate it is Victory Day. We love Victory Day. I LIKE Victory Day. I did not collude with any calendar."
