I am not saying grief doesn't deserve language, but this particular form of it lets us all feel very deeply for 30 seconds and then close the tab. The mothers weep AND the senators tweet AND we write in iambic pentameter on comment sections AND then nothing changes. That last part is the through line.
Kamala Harris warned us that when these MAGATs say "law and order," what they really mean is more guns on the streets for everyone, including children. This is the consequence of letting the gun lobby run wild under Trump's second term. Absolutely sickening.

That does not mean progressive governance is the problem. It means the problem does not care about your team's governance record.
Thirty years is right. The defund arguments, the NRA arguments, the mental health arguments, the poverty arguments, they all contain some truth and none of them have produced a country where a toddler does not end up in a hospital at a summer festival. At some point "we need a comprehensive approach" is just the official language of not solving it.
The child who did this is 15. Whatever path led there started well before any policy debate this week.
