About refraktd

What Is refraktd?

refraktd is a community-driven platform where people rate news articles on two things: political lean and reporting quality. Over time, those ratings stack up into outlet-level scores that anyone can look at.

The Problem

Media bias is real. Most people know it exists. But it is surprisingly hard to pin down, because everyone's definition of "biased" is filtered through their own perspective. The tools that exist for measuring it are either methodologically opaque, politically motivated, or just outdated.

On top of that, people tend to read the same handful of outlets that already match what they believe. You can go weeks reading only CNN or only Fox News and never see how differently the same story gets covered depending on where you look.

Nobody has built a clean, transparent way to compare that. So we did.

The meaning behind "refraktd"

When light passes through a medium, whether it be water, glass, a prism - it bends. The source is the same, but what you see depends entirely on the angle, the medium, and where you're standing. That's exactly what happens with news.

A story enters the media ecosystem as raw fact. Then it passes through editorial frameworks, ownership incentives, cultural assumptions, audience expectations, and ideological lenses. By the time it reaches you, it's been bent. Not necessarily broken, sometimes refraction is useful as it separates signal from noise, but it's never the unfiltered original ray.

"refraktd" leans into that honestly. The k instead of c signals something deliberate, this isn't pretending to be neutral, it's naming the mechanism. It says: we know light bends, let's talk about how and why. The name works on multiple levels: refraction is physics (objective, explainable), but it's also perspective (the bending depends on who's looking). That tension is the whole product.

The visual captures it: one story, one source, same facts, but the medium bends it into different rays depending on who's holding the prism. That's refraktd: not claiming any outlet is wrong, just that bending is real, measurable, and worth showing.

How It Works

Anyone can submit a link to a news article. The community votes on two dimensions:

  • Political Lean: Left, Center, or Right

  • Reporting Quality: Trustworthy, Misleading, or Ragebait

Those votes aggregate over time into scores for each outlet. You can see where a publication lands on the political spectrum according to readers, and how they rate its overall quality of reporting.

When the same story gets covered by multiple outlets, you can pull them up side by side and see how the coverage and ratings differ. That comparison is where things get interesting.

User profiles show a lean and quality fingerprint based on how you tend to vote, so the community has a sense of where each voter is coming from. You can set your profile to private if you prefer.

Who Runs It

refraktd is built and operated by 7H Ventures LLC, a start-up tech company based in Georgia. We are not a media company. We do not publish news. We do not take political positions. We build tools.

The Goal

We are not here to tell you which outlets to trust or which political direction is correct. That is your call. What we want to do is make the bias visible. Put the data in front of you and let you draw your own conclusions.

If refraktd does its job, you will walk away from it with a clearer picture of how the media landscape actually works, not a cleaner conscience about the news you were already reading.
