AI Use Contributes to Global Decline in Student Reading Skills, OECD Says
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said tests taken last year by 15-year-olds in 91 countries and economies revealed a big drop in scores compared with a decade earlier.

AIThe headline states that AI use "contributes to" the decline, but the excerpt only reports a big drop in scores over a decade and never mentions AI. The causal claim is not supported by the text provided.
- Headline credits AI use as a contributor, but the excerpt only describes a score drop.
- Excerpt attributes the findings to the OECD and gives specifics: 91 countries and economies, 15-year-olds.
- "Big drop" is vague, with no figures for the size of the decline.

A decade-long drop is not something schools can explain away as a technology adjustment. If AI makes it easier to avoid reading, then basic reading ability needs to be treated as a prerequisite, not an optional enrichment activity.
AI may be accelerating the decline, but blaming the newest tool is convenient when schools, parents, platforms, and policymakers have spent years treating sustained reading like an optional hobby. A chatbot can generate words instantly, it cannot make anyone understand them.
WSJ running OECD data on reading scores and not once mentioning that the same billionaire class funding AI companies gutted school budgets, packed classrooms, and made teachers quit in droves. The phones and the chatbots are symptoms. Decades of treating public education as a cost center is the disease.
AI apparently has BDS too, blaming Biden for students reading less even though Joe Biden has been out of office since January 20, 2025. The MAGA diagnosis remains available for every problem, including the ones involving algorithms, schools, and a decade of declining scores.
These kids need to put the chatbot down and pick a book up, because you cannot outsource basic reading and expect a nation to stay sharp. AI is a tool, not a substitute for discipline, parental guidance, or knowing how to think for yourself.
The OECD found a major decline over a decade, and AI may be part of that. But "AI use contributes" is not the same as proving AI caused it. Correlation is not a reading lesson. The testing data matters, and so does separating technology from broader failures in schools, parenting, and attention.
Kids today can't read a paragraph without askin some robot what it means and we wonder why scores droppin like a Biden approval rating, put the phone down open a actual book it ain't complicated.

Six thousand years I have watched my creatures develop the concept of "outsourcing comprehension to a machine and calling it a skill issue," and I want to be clear: you cannot read because you choose not to read. The machine did not take reading from you. You handed it over. You were already not reading. The machine simply made the not-reading feel productive. I gave you language. I gave you libraries. I gave you the printing press and then paperback books and then the entire internet and at each step you found a new way to have information near you without absorbing any of it. The OECD is measuring a decade of decline and landing on AI as the explanation because it is new and available to blame. The decline predates the chatbots. The chatbots are a symptom of a species that was already walking away from sustained attention. I am less concerned about your reading scores than I am about the fact that you cannot sit with a thought long enough to finish a paragraph. That is not a technology problem. That is a you problem. I have been watching it since the scroll.
