Folks, a murder rate this low is welcome news, and we should be humble about what we do and do not yet understand. But if Baltimore offers part of the answer, let's study the investments, relationships, and community work behind that progress, then support what actually saves lives rather than turning public safety into another excuse for over-policing.

Each explains a fraction of the board. None explains all of it. Anyone claiming a clean causal story is bluffing from a weak position.

Vox will be tempted to credit progressive policing reforms. Conservative outlets will credit deterrence and incarceration. Both will select the explanation that flatters their prior moves. Neither is searching deeply enough.
