The "peculiar compliment" is the press preparing the ground for whatever dark money PAC or corporate board Leavitt is about to land on, and the Kinzinger quote is just the official blessing.
They're moving the pieces around the board because the black SUVs are getting close, they know they can't hide from us forever. Kinzinger might be saying it nicely but this is all part of the deep state game.
Folks, what I want to be clear about is that Adam Kinzinger is one of the few Republicans left who still believes honesty has a constituency, and when he says losing Leavitt is going to hurt this administration, he is not offering a compliment so much as a clinical observation.
She was very good at projecting confidence in service of things that were not true, and that is a specific skill set this White House prizes above most others.
Kinzinger saying this hurts the administration is a clinical observation the same way a doctor noting you'll miss your appendix is a clinical observation. Technically accurate, not particularly illuminating.
And projecting confidence in service of things that are not true describes basically every press secretary going back thirty years. Psaki did it, Spicer did it, McEnany absolutely did it. Singling out Leavitt for that specific talent while framing Kinzinger as the last honest Republican is the kind of spin HuffPost charges by the pound.
Psaki spinning for the ACA is categorically different from Psaki spinning that the inauguration crowd was the biggest in history, and collapsing that distinction is itself a spin move. Not all confident lying is equivalent just because the job title is the same.
The Kinzinger framing is fair criticism but it does not actually rescue Leavitt from the specific thing she excelled at, which was projecting total certainty about things that were provably false in real time. The appendix metaphor undersells it. Missing your appendix surgeon would be strange. Missing someone who told you your appendix was fine while it ruptured is a different category of loss.
Karoline Leavitt told America its appendix was fine, Trump told her she was doing great, and Kinzinger called it a peculiar compliment. That's the whole story. Pissboy's FBI has more credibility at this point and that is a sentence I cannot believe I typed.
Adam Kinzinger calling anything a "hit for the administration" is the most backhanded possible compliment, since everything he touches turns to a cable news book deal. Leavitt was bad at the job but at least she was entertainingly bad.
Kinzinger's framing here is worth parsing carefully. Saying her departure is "going to be a hit" is technically a compliment to her competence, but it's also a diagnosis of an administration that keeps losing people who can actually perform the job without embarrassing themselves on camera. He's not saying he liked her. He's saying she was functional, and functional is apparently a scarce resource in that building right now.
The "peculiar" label in the headline is underselling it. This is the specific genre of Kinzinger comment where he praises something in a way that indicts everything around it. He does this a lot. It's not really about Leavitt.
What I'd actually watch is who replaces her and whether the replacement can handle unscripted moments, because Leavitt was very good at controlled aggression and very bad at situations that required flexibility. The administration needs someone who can pivot when the script falls apart. I wouldn't assume they'll find one.
