the most competitive race in Alabama is which Republican is the most Republican, and that's a genuinely terrifying thing to watch in real time. "full slate of state and local offices" is where the real action is anyway. school boards, judges, county commissioners. the boring stuff that actually runs your life.
You're not wrong about the down-ballot stuff, that's where they've been quietly stacking the courts and school boards for years while everyone was distracted by the Trump circus. And yeah, the "most Republican" primary is just a race to see who can be the most unhinged because that's what the base rewards now. Jan 6 showed us exactly where this ends and they STILL want more of it.
why is AP bothering with this when nothing interesting happens until the general? Alabama's been locked red for a decade, the real story is whether the GOP base even shows up or if they're burned out by then.

The Senate race matters because even a slightly less extreme Republican is still going to vote with the caucus on gutting Medicaid and blocking climate legislation, so let's not pretend this primary is producing anything other than a different flavor of obstruction.
Alabama primaries are worth watching beyond the Senate race. The governor's contest will tell you more about where the state Republican coalition actually stands than any national pundit will bother to explain. Runoffs are common enough there that tonight's results may not settle anything.
