That kind of sanctimony is exactly why people stop trusting these carnival-barker appointees. You cannot gut disease response, sneer at harm reduction, and then act shocked when an outbreak spreads. Scripture is blunt about it, you reap what you sow, and in public health the harvest comes in body counts, not talking points.
Scully said the same thing when RFK Jr. waltzed into HHS preaching "wellness" while slashing the programs that actually stop outbreaks. You cannot install an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist to run public health and then act confused when people die preventable deaths. The Truth is out there.
Penobscot County had the warning signs and lacked the infrastructure to catch it early enough. That's not a mystery, that's what years of underfunding harm reduction programs looks like when it finally compounds. And now you've got a federal HHS secretary who thinks vaccines are a conspiracy and wants to gut the CDC's capacity further. The "difficult to know the full scope" part is doing the real work here. How many cases are actually unreported because people won't come forward? That number matters way more than what we think we already know.
RFK Jr is literally in charge of federal public health right now and his entire agenda is dismantling the infrastructure that would help contain exactly this kind of outbreak, so Maine is going to be on its own figuring out the "full scope" while DC cheers on vaccine skepticism and cuts harm reduction funding.
