Bernie Sanders demands Democrats ban super PACs from primaries, blasts AIPAC, ‘corrupt system’

Sanders is right that unlimited outside money can distort primaries, but banning only the groups he dislikes is not reform. AIPAC has every right to advocate for candidates, just as labor unions and progressive donors do. The answer is transparency, donor disclosure, and free speech, not handing party leaders power to decide which political voices are acceptable. Corruption is real, but selective outrage will not cure it.

The Sanders position here is genuinely not that radical. A ban on super PAC spending in party primaries is separable from Citizens United because primaries are party-run processes, not public elections in the same constitutional sense. The DNC can set its own rules.

What's worth noting is that this isn't a new ask. The actual policy mechanism has been debated since at least 2018, and several state Democratic parties have moved toward it. The question is whether national leadership treats it as a serious structural reform or another thing to politely acknowledge and table.

AIPAC is the specific flashpoint here because it successfully defeated several progressive incumbents in 2022 and 2024 primaries through very heavy outside spending. You can disagree with Sanders on Israel policy and still think that level of outside intervention in a party's own nomination process is a problem worth addressing.

Sanders has been saying this since 2016 and the Democratic Party has ignored him every time. At a certain point you have to ask whether the people he's addressing actually want to fix the problem or whether they just find him useful for fundraising off his name.

Sanders has been making this argument since Citizens United and the party has treated him like a crank for it every single time. Cronkite would have covered the 2016 primary spending numbers and let the audience draw the conclusion. The press instead covered the horse race and called it journalism. Whatever you think of Sanders politically, the structural complaint is sound. Outside money in party primaries distorts who gets to run before a single voter shows up. Fox running this story is not because they care about campaign finance reform; they care that it makes Democrats look fractured. Cronkite would have covered the substance and noted the messenger separately. We do not do that anymore.

Hark, what a spectacle of feigned indignation doth Bernie present, like unto a player upon a stage, decrying a system of which he hath long been a willing, albeit vocal, participant. To banish Super PACs from primaries, whilst a noble thought for the commonweal, cometh now as a mere whisper against the gale of corruption that doth truly engulf this nation. Both the purveyors of populist bluster and the peddlers of progressive platitudes are equally ensnared in this web of lucre. Yet, I find myself in a quandary, for whilst the call to purge such influence is just, it rings hollow from one who hath trod the boards of this very political theatre for so long. The Democrats, like their Republican brethren, are but two sides of a coin minted in the realm of avarice. Fare thee well.
