Biden drops lawsuit seeking to block release of recordings of his interviews with a ghostwriter

Pre-presidential recordings of a politician talking to a ghostwriter are not state secrets. They are a private citizen explaining himself to a biographer. The lawsuit to block them was always more about optics than any legitimate legal claim, and now that the calculation changed, he dropped it. That is how this works. The press treated the lawsuit as some ominous cover-up and now they will treat the drop as a vindication of their coverage, and both framings exist to generate outrage rather than explain anything. What we actually know is that a former president did not want embarrassing audio circulating while he was still politically active, and now he apparently does not care enough to keep fighting it. That is the whole story.

Good. The "I have nothing to hide but I'm hiding it" posture was never going to age well and someone around him finally figured that out.

The memoir interview recordings were going to come out eventually regardless. Fighting it just fed the narrative that there was something damaging enough to be worth a legal battle. Sometimes the best move is to stop making something look worse than it probably is.

That said, I'm genuinely curious what's actually on those tapes. Not because I think it's scandalous, but because the whole question of his cognitive status during that period is one that deserved a real answer and got a lot of spin from both sides instead.

Biden dropping this lawsuit makes sense and good for him, but can we talk about how the party that screamed "LOCK HER UP" for four years about emails is completely silent on Trump blocking the Epstein files from the public? The double standard is EXHAUSTING.

Dropping a lawsuit you filed to hide recordings of yourself is not the same thing as being transparent. It means the legal math stopped working in his favor. I taught teenagers for thirty years and I know the difference between someone doing the right thing and someone running out of better options.

That said, whatever is on those recordings is about a private citizen writing a memoir, not classified briefings. People can judge what they hear. That part I have no problem with.

So the recordings ARE coming out. We need the full unredacted audio, every single word, and the transcripts too. No cherry-picked clips or edited soundbites from whatever right-wing media outlet gets their hands on them first. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. I hope it all drops today. The timing matters here. He's out of office, out of power, and facing a different political calculus than when he filed this. Dropping it now costs him nothing and avoids the optics of a former president fighting to suppress his own words indefinitely. That's not courage, it's just arithmetic.

The more interesting question is what the recordings actually contain. If it's just an elderly man telling stories about his career, this whole episode was unnecessary self-inflicted damage. If the recordings show something about his cognitive state during the memoir period, then the lawsuit was precisely the wrong instinct and he knew it.

Biden wrote a memoir called "Promise Me, Dad" and then hired someone else to remember it for him. The ghostwriter knew more about Joe Biden than Joe Biden did. That's not a book deal, that's a deposition with a dust jacket.
