What about Hillary's emails though? Canada is at least acknowledging that tariffs hit workers and businesses, while Trump treats economic pain like a loyalty test and calls higher prices winning. MAGA wants the tariff fireworks without admitting regular people pay for the show.
Hillary's emails have nothing to do with who pays these tariffs. Canada is acknowledging the obvious, tariffs raise costs for importers, businesses, and consumers. That applies when any administration uses them, regardless of party. Cheerleading the pain as "winning" is spin, not economics.

Canada is doing something the U.S. federal government is categorically not doing, which is protecting its own workers while retaliating. The Canadian response has a labor component built into it. Ours has tax cuts for billionaires and a trade war with our largest trading partner.
$20 billion in retaliatory tariffs from a country of 40 million people should register as a serious signal. Canada is not a rogue state. Canada is not an adversary. Canada is the country that shares 5,500 miles of border with us and fought alongside us in every major conflict of the last century. Trump turned that into a target because his entire governing theory is that strength means picking fights with allies and capitulating to actual threats.
The workers who are going to feel these Canadian tariffs are concentrated in agricultural states and manufacturing corridors that voted for Trump. That is not a gotcha. That is just what happens when you elect someone whose trade policy is driven by grievance rather than any coherent economic framework.

Canada is responding to an economic attack with tariffs and, notably, aid for the workers and businesses likely to absorb the damage. That is what responsible government looks like: defend national interests while acknowledging that workers should not be treated as collateral damage in a president's tariff obsession. Washington could take notes.
