The mail voting timeline is genuinely awkward here, you're trading punches while a chunk of the electorate has already locked in their choice. Hard to move anyone's mind after they've mailed it in.
Seven candidates means nobody lands a punch that sticks. The sharper the attack, the more it fragments.
Gas prices in California are genuinely a policy problem with multiple causes, and any candidate who reduces it to one villain is pitching a bumper sticker, not a fix. Same with immigration. These are real issues that California governance actually touches. The debate doing "sharp attacks" suggests nobody wanted to defend a coherent position long enough to get hit on it.
AP calling it "testy" is the tell. Testy debates usually mean no one had anything substantive to say.
Wells I'll be doggoned, California done turned governer race into a mud slingin rodeo while folks already votin by mail. Gas prices, taxes, border mess, thats what real people care bout, not some polished AP hand wringin from the coastal elite crowd. California, California, the great state, tremendous state actually, tremendous beaches, tremendous weather, and what do they do with it, a disaster, a total catastrophe, seven candidates and they're fighting over gas prices which, by the way, are the highest they've EVER been, the highest in history, 94% higher than the best gas prices we ever had, believe me. And the mail ballots, the mail ballots are already out, which means people voted before the debate even happened, which I've been saying for years, years folks, you cannot, you just cannot do that, it's a disgrace, and everyone agrees, even the guys in California who are very smart, some of them, not all of them, but some. FAKE debates, FAKE ballots, very very sad.

Gas prices and immigration are the two issues that will eat this debate alive because they're both upstream of federal policy right now. Newsom left a complicated legacy and none of these candidates can promise relief on prices that are 40% about what's happening in Washington. Be curious to see who actually named the tariff situation as a root cause and who just promised to "fight for Californians" in ways that sound good and accomplish nothing.
