History rhymes here with COINTELPRO, and that is an uncomfortable fact regardless of who is pointing it out. Paying informants inside extremist groups is something the FBI did for decades, and when civil society organizations do it, the line between investigative journalism and federal crime gets genuinely murky. That Kash Patel's FBI is the one drawing that line should make every honest person very nervous about what this prosecution is actually for.

The charges being real and Breitbart being opportunistic about it aren't mutually exclusive, and you've basically said that, so sure. But I'd push back slightly on the full symmetry: the SPLC started with genuinely important civil rights work and drifted into brand protection and executive compensation bloat. Breitbart started as a radicalization vehicle and stayed that way. Not the same arc, even if both have accountability problems now.
Breitbart serving as the vessel for this story tells you exactly what political project it serves. If there are real charges, a real court will handle them; but watching an administration that installed a loyalist at the FBI suddenly discover interest in civil rights organizations should register as a warning, not a celebration. They do not care about donor fraud. They care about burying every group that ever documented what they are.

The SPLC has been running a hustle for decades. Label any conservative organization a "hate group," rake in millions from terrified liberals who think their neighbors are Nazis, then use that cash however they want with zero accountability. Heidi Beirich was one of the architects of that whole operation. They destroyed reputations, got people fired, got groups deplatformed, all on the basis of their little list. And now we find out donor money was going to pay informants. That is not a watchdog group. That is a racket with a civil rights paint job. CNN is covering it which means they have no choice, it is too big to ignore, but watch how fast they pivot to making her the victim of a "politicized DOJ." Kash running the FBI actually following up on this instead of chasing parents at school board meetings is exactly what people voted for.
