Political courage is not a private arrangement with Trump, it is the duty to tell the truth when he is wrong. Cornyn may have a different relationship, but Republicans keep bleeding credibility every time they confuse loyalty to a man with loyalty to the Constitution, to decency, and to the voters who expected better.

yeah this is all true and also completely irrelevant to anything that will happen next, which is the part that keeps me up at night. we've had this exact conversation about republican credibility probably forty times since 2016 and the credibility just keeps bleeding and somehow the patient never dies. cornyn knows what trump is. cassidy knew. massie knows. the voters who "expected better" either still voted for them or stayed home, so the feedback loop that was supposed to correct this never corrected anything.

the constitution framing is the one that gets me because republicans have been wrapping naked loyalty in constitutional language for so long that the words just don't mean what they used to. every single one of them has a private rationalization for why THIS particular accommodation is different from THAT one. cornyn's apparently is that he has some back-channel thing going where he tells trump privately what he thinks. which, okay, great, very brave, truly a profile in courage, telling a man in private that he might be slightly wrong and then voting with him anyway.

i don't think they're confused about loyalty to a man versus loyalty to the constitution. i think they know exactly what they're doing and just need us to keep believing they're confused.

That last paragraph is the whole thing right there and it does not get said plainly enough.

The confusion is the performance. Cornyn is not a stupid man. He understands what a back-channel objection is worth when you vote yes anyway, which is nothing. The private courage routine is specifically designed to give reporters and constituents a quote that lets everyone pretend there is more distance than there is.

And you are right that the credibility death has been on a long slow drip since 2016 and the party just keeps functioning. I used to think there was a floor. Some vote, some moment, some norm so naked that the coalition would finally fracture. There is no floor. The feedback loop got broken and I am not sure it can be repaired from inside the current system.

The constitutional framing thing is something I track pretty closely because it is how the legal and institutional cover gets manufactured. You strip the meaning out of the language and then the language cannot be used against you anymore. That is not an accident. By the time someone tries to invoke constitutional constraint against this administration the words will have been handled so many times they will not hold weight.

Cornyn knows. He is just hoping nobody writes the definitive summary until after he is done collecting his pension.

this is the old Senate survival instinct in miniature, a little distance from Trump when it costs nothing, a little loyalty when it matters, and a great deal of theater in between. the point is not principle, it is placement. they all know the center of gravity has moved so far into the moneyed executive apparatus that the only real question is whether you stand close enough to the machine to keep your name off the worst parts of the record.

that is how democratic life gets thinned out, not with one dramatic break, but with a hundred careful recalibrations by people who still want to be called statesmen. Cornyn can call it a different situation if that helps him sleep, but the country keeps getting governed by the same logic, submit, adapt, and let the billionaire class keep writing the future while elected officials explain why they had no choice.

So basically Corncorn is trying to act like he’s the “reasonable” one while still dangling from Trump’s orbit, just with a slightly cleaner PR spin. It's the same old play: distance yourself when it’s convenient, then swoop in with feigned shock when the fallout hits.

Cornyn's doing the thing where he wants credit for not being as publicly obsequious as Cassidy or Massie without actually explaining what he did differently. "My relationship is different" isn't a statement of fact, it's a hope that nobody asks follow-up questions. If the substantive disagreement matters, say what it was. If it doesn't and this is just about optics and positioning, then stop pretending there's a principle at stake. The vagueness itself is the tell.

Cornyn knows the game, keep Trump at arm's length when it suits you, then act shocked when the base remembers who actually fights for them. Cassidy and Massie can enjoy the coastal media scolding, but Trump is still the one setting the terms and the rest of these officeholders know it.
