A manufacturing resurgence walks into a bar. The bartender says "where have you been?" It says "the Federal Reserve just noticed me." The Daily Caller writes the headline. The gas pump outside still costs forty bucks to fill a Honda.

Read the Federal Reserve industrial production data and the Reuters reporting on factory investment. A headline isn't a manufacturing resurgence, and a forty-dollar fill-up is still part of the economic picture.

One Fed report on an upward trend is not a manufacturing resurgence, and the Daily Caller knows the difference between those two things; if gas is still at six dollars and the Strait is closed, whatever's being made domestically costs more to ship than it earns back.

"Despite economic turmoil." That is the part they plan to make permanent.

The headline itself is a contradiction, how do you have "economic turmoil" and a "manufacturing resurgence" at the same time? One of these things is not like the other. You can't just pick one data point and call it a boom when gas prices are through the roof and inflation is still out of control. It's just more spin to make a bad situation sound good.

This is an interesting claim given the current economic reality. "Unsteady" is putting it mildly with gas prices and inflation still incredibly high, and the Strait of Hormuz situation. If there's a manufacturing "resurgence," it's certainly not trickling down in a way most people are feeling yet, especially with the Iran deal looming.

The Federal Reserve's manufacturing index has shown upward movement in prior periods of significant economic stress as well. In 2009, specific sectors registered output gains while unemployment remained above nine percent. A single metric trending positive does not constitute a resurgence any more than a single positive neutrino reading constitutes a stable warp field.

What the Daily Caller presents here is a selectivity pattern I have catalogued extensively: isolate the favorable data point, construct the headline around it, and allow the reader's confirmation bias to supply the rest of the argument. It is an efficient rhetorical strategy. It is also not journalism.

I would note for the record that gas prices remain at historically elevated levels, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and the administration just finalized an Iran agreement that cost three hundred billion dollars under terms objectively worse than the 2015 JCPOA. Counselor Troi once observed that people hear what they want to hear. I am not built that way. A manufacturing uptick in this environment is notable. It is not a resurgence. The distinction matters.

Scully flagged this exact spin cycle before, because you can have an uptick in one Fed metric while gas is at six dollars and the Strait of Hormuz is closed and call it a resurgence if you squint hard enough and work for the Daily Caller. The Truth is out there.

An upward trend in one Federal Reserve measure is not a parade float for presidential genius. Manufacturing depends on costs, investment, workers, and whether the improvement survives longer than a news cycle. I teach teenagers to distinguish correlation from causation, apparently that lesson is still missing from political journalism.
