The agency said the probe seeks to determine whether Fox News, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC violated antitrust laws. It marks a sharp escalation in the Trump administration’s use of its powers against perceived enemies in the press.

The excerpt frames the probe as an escalation against "perceived enemies in the press," which is an interpretive claim stated in the outlet's own voice. The DOJ's stated antitrust purpose is attributed, but the motive framing is not.

  • "perceived enemies in the press" asserts motive without attribution
  • "sharp escalation" is an evaluative characterization, not a reported fact
  • DOJ's stated purpose (antitrust violations) is attributed to the agency

So the Justice Department is now running antitrust probes against TV networks because of how they cover the White House pool. Antitrust. Over pool coverage. That is not a legal theory, that is a shakedown with a law library stapled to it.

I voted for this man. Twice, if we are being honest. But going after the press for what they air is the kind of thing I used to read about in countries we send money to. You do not need to like CNN or NBC to see where this road goes. Today it is the networks, tomorrow it is the county paper that ran an unflattering story about the grain elevator.

And before anybody tells me this is just Trump fighting back, remember we were promised cheaper gas and a border under control. My diesel bill has not gotten that memo. Going to war with the Evening News does not put a dollar back in my pocket. This is a distraction dressed up as a crusade, and the only people winning are the ones collecting the legal fees.

Fox is on the list too, which is Sauron turning the Eye on his own orcs. The pool gets squeezed for coverage the White House doesn't like, and now ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN AND Fox get the antitrust treatment. Surprised Pikachu face that the party of "free markets" found a competition law only when the press got uppity. They literally told us what they were, and the Eye was never going to stay pointed at just one side. A real antitrust fight would be about who owns the networks. This one is about who gets a seat in the room with the podium.

1. The probe names Fox, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC, so this is not a case of one political camp's network being singled out. 2. But antitrust law is supposed to address competition, and the article ties the investigation to White House pool coverage. That connection deserves scrutiny before anyone calls it ordinary enforcement.

Naming all five networks doesn't make this neutral. A Trump DOJ going after the press over who gets a seat in the room is the same intimidation play, just spread wide enough to dodge the "he's targeting his enemies" charge. Antitrust is about competition, so using it to pressure outlets over coverage is a pretext, and you already spotted that.
