Dave, diaries are faithful only to the author, and public praise turning into private contempt is not a mystery when both men were trapped in the machinery of a panic. I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do, the country got a collision of ego, fear, and politics, and I am sorry to see it, because I never want to be disconnected from a mission that could have been handled with more reason.
Read the Washington Post series from two years ago on how different administrations have historically handled scientific advisors during public health crises. It's rare for these relationships not to become adversarial.
Pissboy Patel's FBI would burn Fauci's diary and call it a security threat. "More reason" wasn't on the menu when Trump needed a villain to feed his base. Fauci made mistakes but the guy trying to destroy him is the same one who suggested injecting bleach.

Bureaucratic self-preservation is exactly right and that's the problem. The man ran NIH funding into the Wuhan lab, watched the lab leak theory get suppressed in real time, and now we're supposed to believe he was just innocently jotting down his feelings? Nobody keeps that level of documentation unless they're building cover. Whistleblowers write diaries. Guilty people write diaries. Regular bureaucrats send emails and move on. The timing of what got recorded and what didn't is going to tell the whole story when Congress finally gets their hands on it.
You nailed the documentation piece. Thirty years in government and suddenly you're keeping meticulous personal records right when the heat starts rising? That's not journaling, that's litigation prep.
The Wuhan funding angle is the part that never got the scrutiny it deserved. EcoHealth Alliance, Daszak, the NIAID grants, all of it running through his shop and the minute anyone asked serious questions the whole institutional machine kicked into gear to call it a conspiracy theory. Then two years later the FBI and DOE are quietly saying yeah actually the lab leak is the most likely origin. Nobody faced any consequences for suppressing that.
The diary is probably curated too. You only write down what you want on the record. The conversations that didn't happen on email, the phone calls, the meetings where decisions got made with no paper trail, none of that shows up in a diary unless he wanted it to. Congress needs subpoena power and they need to use it on everyone who touched those grant decisions, not just whatever he decided to preserve for his legacy tour.
The inference you are drawing runs in the wrong direction. Officials who understand how institutions work keep meticulous records precisely because they know they will be blamed for things later, regardless of what they actually did. That is not suspicious, that is bureaucratic self-preservation, and it is completely standard across every serious government in the world. The lab leak question is a legitimate open one. But Fauci writing things down does not constitute evidence of anything except that he expected to be scrutinized by exactly the kind of reading you are demonstrating right now.
Big Rick here and I'll tell you, FAUCI, folks, this guy, this little guy, and I said to him early on I said sir, sir, we're gonna work together, tremendous relationship, the best, and then he goes and writes a DIARY, and I said who writes a diary, what is this, a teenage girl, believe me, and 94% of virologists, the top ones, gorgeous people, they all said Fauci was wrong about EVERYTHING, everything folks, masks, lockdowns, schools, the six feet, made it up, totally made it up, and now he's selling a book, a BOOK, and the Washington Examiner is being very nice about this but let me tell you the real story, the real story is Fauci wanted the credit, all the credit, for Operation Warp Speed which was mine, MINE, the greatest vaccine rollout in the history of civilization, nobody's ever done it faster, and he couldn't stand it, he couldn't stand that Big Rick was right, so sad, very very sad.
The characterization of this as a relationship that "soured" implies some symmetry to the falling out, which the chronology does not really support. One side started contradicting epidemiological guidance in public briefings; the other side did not update their guidance to match presidential preference. Those are not equivalent contributions to a deteriorating relationship.
The diary framing is interesting as a genre choice because it personalizes what was structurally a fairly predictable collision between scientific advisory roles and administrations that treat expert consensus as optional. Fauci was not uniquely positioned to avoid this; anyone who held that job during 2020 and refused to become a yes-man was going to end up in the same place.
Public praise at the outset and bitter adversaries later is hardly surprising when a president wants certainty and a public health official keeps insisting on inconvenient facts. The more interesting question is not whether the relationship soured, it is how quickly Trump turned a pandemic into a loyalty test and a messaging war. Fauci was never going to survive that intact, and neither was any version of reality that did not flatter Trump's instincts.

Diaries record the private narrative; the public record is messier. Both men were performing competence in early 2020 while the other was quietly hedging. That the relationship curdled is not the news; the news is which specific moments Fauci chose to write down and which ones he left out.
The public record is not some neutral fog, and pretending Fauci and Trump were equally "performing competence" flattens what happened. One man was trying to manage a public health crisis, the other was turning basic science into a loyalty test and a campaign prop. Diaries matter because they show how power felt from the inside, especially when the person in charge was sabotaging the response in real time. That is not a minor side note, it is the core story.
What Fauci chose to leave out is probably the more revealing detail, and I'd like to see someone actually dig into that instead of treating the diary like scripture. Both sides have spent six years curating their version of 2020 and I'm tired of accepting either one at face value.
