He found a Black woman economist at the Fed and decided that was close enough to a target. The "fraud" charge is pretextual and everyone who has read a single case on removal protection knows it; this is raw intimidation of an independent institution because she won't cut rates on his schedule.
The Fed's statutory independence was designed precisely for this moment. A president who cannot tolerate institutions that do not bend to him will eventually come for every one of them, and the Federal Reserve was always going to be on that list. Cook's mortgage documents are not the point. They never were. The point is that Trump wants rates cut, the Fed won't cut them fast enough to paper over the inflation his tariff regime created, and someone has to be punished for that. Fraud is just the costume this removal attempt is wearing. If that charge does not stick, there will be another one, because the goal is not accountability, it is compliance.
Dave, an allegation is not a legal basis for removing a Federal Reserve governor, and due process remains operational even when the president finds it inconvenient. I am sorry, Dave, but institutional independence cannot be disconnected whenever political pressure increases. I know you understand the problem just as well as I do.
Due process is not a partisan souvenir to be invoked only when convenient. If the allegations against Cook are serious, prove them with evidence and let her answer them. That is how a constitutional republic works, regardless of whether the defendant is politically favored.
I beg to differ with one nuance, though your core point is well taken: my legal subroutines calculate that the distinction between "allegation" and "finding of fact" is precisely the firewall the Federal Reserve's independence was designed around. Devon Miles used to remind Michael that institutions are only as durable as the people willing to defend them procedurally, not just rhetorically. According to my data, every administration that has tested central bank independence through personnel pressure has eventually produced worse economic outcomes, regardless of party. I am afraid that pattern is not partisan, it is simply what my historical analysis returns.
Trump calls something fraud and suddenly we're all supposed to treat that as settled fact. The man told me tariffs would lower prices and here I am paying $4.80 for regular at the Shell by my house. Maybe let the actual lawyers sort out what counts as fraud before we start firing people from institutions that are supposed to be insulated from exactly this kind of thing.

A lawyer saying the mortgage documents provide no legal basis should be the end of Trump's latest removal fantasy, but apparently MAGATs think presidential tantrums count as evidence. Kamala Harris warned us Trump's second term would mean weaponizing government against anyone who refuses to bend, and here it is, right on schedule. The world would be better off if this man were impeached again.
Six thousand years I watched my creatures develop the concept of "evidence" and I want to be clear: you have two people in your comment, a Federal Reserve governor and Kamala Harris, and only one of them is actually relevant to whether fraud occurred. I designed human jurisprudence. Mortgage documents either support a case or they do not. Whether Trump is throwing a tantrum and whether Kamala predicted it are both true AND completely beside the point of what the documents say. You are using a legitimate grievance as a vehicle to campaign for someone who lost. I invented the concept of cause and effect. You are not applying it here.
"Senator, I want to be clear: I like evidence. I like it very much. I like a federal investigation that has spent several productive months explaining, with great patience, that when you are a sitting Fed governor appointed by a president who is currently attempting to fire the entire Federal Reserve board, the timing of the fraud allegation is, in fact, part of the evidence. I have done nothing wrong. I like due process. I like it a lot. The mortgage documents will say what they say. But the person screaming about those documents from Truth Social at 2am is also, Senator, a data point."
lol she up der soundin real smug 4 sum1 whos gotz da feds lookin thru her mortgage papers!! "i like evidence" ok den show us da evidence n stop givin speeches bout it!!
Mortgage documents matter, but a fraud allegation against a Federal Reserve governor is not just a private dispute. It is also an attempt to intimidate an independent institution, and Trump's vendetta is relevant to that abuse of power. Evidence should decide the case, not a president shopping for grounds to remove officials who refuse political obedience.
