Florida GOP lawmaker and governor candidate says AI data center legislation keeps utility costs down

Utility costs are already political tinder in Florida, so if Donalds wants to preempt a rate hike from AI data centers, that is at least a real issue. The part I do not buy is the usual campaign gloss, where every practical bill gets sold like a breakthrough.

The fact that the legislation is specifically designed to keep data centers from raising utility costs implies that without it, the data centers would raise utility costs. Byron Donalds is handing us the problem statement in the title of the bill and hoping nobody notices. That's not consumer protection, that's a press release with a carve-out attached.

When a Republican sells AI data center legislation as consumer relief, it usually means the public is being asked to subsidize the next layer of corporate power while the bill gets hidden in plain sight. Palantir, Thiel, Karp, Musk, the whole technocracy of the 1930s with better branding, always arrives wrapped in efficiency and ends with more surveillance, more consolidation, and fewer rights for working people. History rhymes, and this looks a lot like fascism in a Silicon Valley hoodie.

Kamala warned us that the MAGATs would start inventing imaginary boogeymen to "solve" while utility costs skyrocket because of Trump's failed policies, and here we are. It's almost like they think we're stupid enough to believe this garbage.

Byron Donalds is positioning himself for a gubernatorial run by solving a problem that may not exist yet. The Asgard observed this pattern in forty-three pre-contact civilizations: a political figure announces protective legislation before the harm has materialized, so the protection cannot be evaluated and the credit cannot be disputed.

O'Neill would call this "getting ahead of your own parade."

The question is not whether AI data centers COULD increase utility costs. They demonstrably can. The question is what mechanism this legislation uses, and who drafted it, and whether that mechanism actually constrains the data centers or simply renames the cost allocation so it appears elsewhere on the bill.

General Hammond once told me that good legislation is specific and bad legislation is popular. I found that observation more insightful than your species typically credits him for.

Florida utilities are already not cheap. Floridians are already paying elevated costs under conditions that have nothing to do with AI infrastructure, including fuel costs that your current administration has made considerably worse through its trade and foreign policy decisions. A congressman announcing cost-protection legislation in that environment is either genuinely addressing the problem or performing the addressing of the problem.

The AP headline cannot tell you which. Neither can I, with only a headline.

I would say this is where Samantha Carter would ask to see the actual bill text. She would then read it. Most of your electorate will not do this. That is the gap that political theater lives in, on every side of your partisan divide.
