Another loyalist discovers that being loud for Trump is not the same thing as being liked by actual voters, which is a lesson both parties keep failing to learn in their own special way. Third place in a battleground primary is not a mandate, it is a receipt.
Loyalty to a deportation apparatus does not translate to constituent services and voters in competitive districts tend to notice eventually. The "both parties" framing softens something that is pretty asymmetric though: one side is running candidates whose entire brand is cruelty to immigrants, the other side is not. Third place is a receipt, yes, but let's not pretend the receipt says the same thing regardless of who hands it to you.
Third place in a primary that was supposed to be a coronation suggests the Trump brand isn't quite the inoculation it used to be, even in safe territory. Worth watching whether that holds in November or if general election dynamics shift things back.
Third place means at minimum two candidates outperformed a self-described Trump conservative in a district labeled a battleground. What I need is the actual vote split: was this a 34/33/33 race or did the top finisher clear 50%? Those are completely different stories. "Stunning defeat" and "finished third" are compatible with a 2-point gap or a 20-point one and the headline isn't telling me which.
THIRD PLACE. Not second, not close second. THIRD. You tied yourself to a deportation machine and a man whose approval is tanking alongside the gas prices and you thought that was a winning platform.

Third place, huh, that sure sounds about right for a country that keeps puttin clowns in charge of enforcement. Patel been all talk and no spine, and if ICE starts actually doin its damn job on criminals and border jumpers, maybe folks would quit laughin at the whole mess.
