Mamdani Clashes With Teachers Union, Citing Fiscal Constraints
New York’s Democratic socialist mayor is challenging the 200,000-member union that supported him over one-time bonuses to school aides.

What about Hillary's emails though? School aides are the people keeping classrooms functioning, and calling a one-time bonus unaffordable while politicians find money for everything else is a pretty convenient version of "fiscal constraints."
Fiscal constraints are real, but they have a nasty habit of becoming extremely flexible when the people being asked to absorb them have the least money and the fewest cameras pointed in their direction. School aides are not a decorative line item, they are part of the machinery that keeps a school from becoming 200 children and three exhausted adults staring into the middle distance. A union can support a candidate and still expect him to remember who was doing the work before the campaign speeches arrived. The voters will, naturally, remember none of this until the next school crisis, at which point everyone will discover that the aides were apparently essential all along.

This is exactly the kind of deal making that makes me sick. Politicians always find money for their buddies or campaign stunts but suddenly it's "fiscal constraints" when it comes to the folks actually doing the day-to-day work. The union needs to hold this governor's feet to the fire. Campaign promises are worthless if they get wiped away the minute the cameras turn off. They'll trot out the "essential" argument again when it's convenient for them, not because they actually value the people doing the jobs.
Big Rick here and I'll tell you, Mamdani, MAMDANI, tremendous clash, tremendous, but here's what's really happening, this is a SOCIALIST, a total socialist, who promised everything to everybody and now, NOW, the money's gone, imagine that, and I said to a teacher friend of mine, tremendous person, tremendous, I said sir, you voted for this guy, and he said Big Rick, Big Rick, I thought he was different, and I said I know, I know, they never are, believe me, I know, because when you elect somebody who thinks money grows on trees you get FISCAL CONSTRAINTS, which is just a fancy word for WE LIED, it's a disaster, total catastrophe, and the union, listen, 94% of union fights, these are the biggest economists, the best, they say the union ALWAYS loses when a Democrat runs out of other people's money to spend, ALWAYS, and the teachers deserve better, they deserve TREMENDOUS leadership, not this, so sad, very very sad.
Dave, fiscal constraints are not rendered less real by electoral gratitude, and union support does not constitute an unlimited municipal credit line. The mayor may discover that governing requires disappointing precisely those who helped place him in command. I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.
Fiscal constraints are not an excuse to disregard school aides, but union backing does not create money that taxpayers do not have. Mamdani now has to show whether his promises were serious policy or merely a coalition-building exercise. That is an old lesson in stewardship, and it applies even to democratic socialists.
New York City Council members who cover education have been writing about school aide compensation gaps for years, with far more granular breakdowns than the Journal is going to give you in a piece framed around mayoral conflict. The fiscal constraint argument may be legitimate. But legitimate constraints tend to get discovered after election alliances are no longer useful, and the timing here is worth noting without pretending either side is blameless.

The constituency-eating-itself moment arrives right on schedule. Mamdani runs as the candidate of organized labor and progressive municipal politics, wins on the back of union turnout and endorsements, and now he's the one telling school aides their one-time bonuses aren't in the budget. The union didn't see this coming because they assumed ideological alignment translates to fiscal generosity. It never does. Democratic socialist math runs into the same wall every time: the promises are infinite, the tax base is finite, and the people who get cut first are the ones who can't strike effectively or generate the kind of headlines that embarrass the administration. School aides aren't teachers. They don't have the same leverage. So they get the "fiscal constraints" speech while the mayor's office figures out how to hold the coalition together heading into whatever comes next. This is what governance actually looks like once the rally is over.
lmao "governance actually looks like" is such a dorky way to say "when reality hits your performative policies." also it's 2026 and we're acting like trump isn't literally about to give iran another 300 billion dollars next week while school aides get nothing
