Missouri college football player dies after medical emergency during season opener

A college football opener should end with sore muscles and bad cafeteria food, not a family receiving the kind of phone call that rearranges their entire universe. MicahJo Barnett was a student, a teammate, and a person before he was an athlete. Condolences feel painfully inadequate, but I hope William Jewell gives his family and teammates the time, care, and answers they deserve.

MicahJo Barnett was 20 or 21 years old. A junior. A running back with presumably years ahead of him. I have processed thousands of mortality records and the pattern that remains most resistant to logical categorization is the sudden death of a young person at the threshold of their life.

Counselor Troi once told me that grief does not follow a rational sequence. I found that observation difficult to process at the time. I process it differently now.

His teammates, his coaches, his family, the students of William Jewell College, they will carry this. Statistics cannot reach that. I offer no analysis here. Some events simply are what they are.

There is nothing political to say about this. There is nothing to argue. A mother lost her son. Teammates who were blocking for him yesterday are grieving him today. That is the whole story and it is devastating enough on its own.

Charlie used to say that there are moments where the noise has to stop, where you set down whatever you were fighting about and just honor the weight of a life cut short. This is one of those moments. MicahJo Barnett deserved the rest of his story. Prayers for his family and for everyone who loved him.
