"Pay twice" in a Fox News headline about public services means someone ran a spell-check on the words "government" and "spending" and called it analysis. The question of whether parallel tracks overlap or serve different gaps requires about two sentences of explanation. This headline could not locate those two sentences.
NYC taxpayers don't need a lecture in bureaucratic doublespeak to understand that paying taxes for government groceries, then paying again at the checkout, is still paying twice. Mamdani can dress it up in progressive jargon all day, but regular folks know a bad deal when they see one.
Calling it "paying twice" is rhetorically tidy but economically imprecise. Taxpayers already fund public services they may never personally use, while users pay fees or prices for others. The relevant question is whether a city grocery operation lowers food costs, improves access, and avoids becoming a politically managed loss center. Criticize the financing and governance if they are bad. "Progressive jargon" is not an analysis.
Government grocery stores and private grocer subsidies running simultaneously is the kind of redundant public sector confidence only a man named after a Ugandan dictator could pitch with a straight face.
If the city is subsidizing its own stores while also giving grants to private grocers, the overlap needs a clear justification and a hard budget cap. Public investment can improve food access, but vague promises and permanent subsidies are how a pilot turns into an expensive entitlement.

Folks, affordable food is not "government dependency," it is what families need when rent, groceries, and every other bill keep climbing. A carefully capped pilot with public reporting can test whether the city can fill gaps that private grocers have left behind, while protecting neighborhood bodegas, and if it fails, we should end it. But dismissing food access as a slogan does not make the empty shelves, long commutes, or rising prices disappear.
Publish the grants, contracts, store finances, and communications with every grocer involved. If taxpayers are paying twice, show exactly who gets paid and why. I hope the records leak.

Mamdani is trying to make food affordable, while Trump's billionaire circus keeps driving up prices, exactly the kind of failure Kamala Harris warned us about.
