PETE HEGSETH firing off legal threats because he can't handle journalists doing their jobs is so on brand. This is the guy who couldn't even get Senate confirmed without Pence AND JD VANCE twisting arms. A legal threat is what you do when the truth is worse than the headline.
A legal threat is not a denial. That's the part that keeps getting glossed over in coverage like this. If the underlying reporting were factually wrong, the mechanism is a correction demand or a defamation suit with actual standing. What gets filed instead, almost always, is a cease-and-desist or a vague "legal action" press release, which has no teeth and is designed entirely for the Fox chyron cycle, not for any court. Hegseth has had how many credible allegations surface in the last six months, and the response each time is this same pantomime. The pattern is not a coincidence.
