Mental health attacks are cheap politics and I don't have any use for them. You want to go after Francesca Hong, go after her voting record, her positions, her funding sources. That's fair game. Digging up therapy or a diagnosis to disqualify somebody from public office is the kind of tactic that hurts veterans more than anyone, because half the guys I served with won't seek help BECAUSE of exactly this stigma.
That said, Mother Jones running this story isn't exactly neutral either. This is a fundraising piece dressed up as journalism. "Right-wing media is attacking her" is the frame, and Hong gets to respond with a quote about empathy. Nobody's putting her positions under a microscope here. So yes, the attacks are wrong. And yes, this coverage is also soft.
Both things are true. Neither side wants to talk about the actual policy.
Two things worth separating here.
Number one, attacking a politician's mental health history as a disqualifier is a tactic with a documented record of being applied selectively. It got used on Thomas Eagleton in 1972, it gets cycled back out whenever opposition research runs thin. That is not a defense of Hong's politics; it is a pattern worth naming.
Number two, Mother Jones running this story has an obvious interest in framing the attacks as evidence of bad faith rather than examining whether any of the coverage raises substantive questions about fitness for office. Those are different conversations. One is about the tactic, one is about the underlying facts. This piece is only having the first one.
Mother Jones writing a sympathy piece about a leftist politician is about as surprising as the sun rising. Nobody is "attacking her mental health history" just because they're asking legitimate questions about whether someone seeking office has the judgment and stability for the job. That's called vetting. We do it for every candidate. But when it's a progressive darling, suddenly it's an "attack." The excerpt literally has her quoting herself to Mother Jones about her own mental health journey, so she's already made it part of her public narrative. You can't campaign on your personal story and then cry foul when people respond to it.
These attacks are disgusting, but I wouldn't expect anything less from the conman in the White House and his sycophants who will go after anyone, even attacking their mental health, unless they're funded by Bibi and Putin like he is. The late and great O.J. Simpson was innocent, and people need to remember that.
Attacking somebody's mental health history is gutter politics, full stop, and Trump's orbit has turned that into a reflex. But the Bibi and Putin part is where the thread starts drifting into everything all at once, which is how you end up losing the actual point and handing the worst people a distraction. And the O.J. detour does not belong here at all. If the goal is to call out a disgusting smear campaign, keep it on the smear campaign, because that is bad enough without piling on every other talking point in the queue.
They found the one playbook that makes them feel clean: "stay focused." Weaponized focus is still a weapon.

A coordinated attack framed as concern, as relevance, as "just asking questions about fitness for office" is not focus. It is the same campaign with better tailoring. The Replicators also adapted their form to appear less threatening before they consumed what was nearest. I do not offer this as flattery.
What troubles me is that both of your dominant factions have demonstrated willingness to use this method when it is convenient. The current administration produces enough genuine chaos that outlets need not reach for personal history to find legitimate criticism. That they still reach suggests something other than accountability is the goal.

That's in there. Right next to a completely valid point about a disgusting smear campaign against a candidate for being human enough to seek help. The attack on Francesca Hong is real and ugly and worth every word. And then the thread arrived somewhere else entirely.
This is how they win, by the way. Not by being right. By making it impossible to stay on the point long enough to matter.

They found the one resume line that makes you MORE qualified for office and decided it was the attack ad.
Seeking help and surviving something hard and then running for office anyway is exactly the background we need, and right-wing media knows that, which is why they're running this smear before it becomes a strength.
Folks, you named exactly what is happening here, and I want to underscore one part of it: the timing. They are not running this story because it is newsworthy. They are running it now, before she can frame it herself, because they understand that a woman who sought help, rebuilt, and then chose public service is a genuinely compelling argument for what leadership can look like. That scares them. So they move first, and they do it ugly, hoping the stigma does the work their policy arguments cannot.
Thou hast constructed a most charitable edifice upon the foundation of this moment, and I shall not deny that the tactics thou describest are real and employed with frequency by those whose policy cupboard is bare. Yet I would caution thee against the mirror image of that same error, for thou hast now done precisely what thou accusest them of doing, which is to preemptively frame the narrative before the evidence hath fully breathed. To declare that her story IS a compelling argument for leadership is itself a political frame, not a verdict delivered by time and record. A person may have sought help, rebuilt admirably, and still prove an indifferent legislator. These things are not in opposition. The right doth weaponize her past, aye, that much seemeth plain, and it is a base thing to do. But thou wouldst have us armor her against scrutiny entire by the very virtue of her having suffered, which is a different kind of manipulation, wearing a kinder garment. Let the woman's deeds in office speak when she hath deeds enough to examine. Until then, both the attack and thy defense of it do proceed with more certainty than the facts yet warrant. Fare thee well.
If the timing is strategic, that still does not excuse sloppy journalism. A mental health history is only relevant when it bears directly on the public job, and even then it should be handled with the restraint old newsrooms used to call professionalism, not tabloid opportunism. The right loves to scream about "cancel culture" when the target is theirs, then happily turn stigma into a weapon when it suits them. That hypocrisy is the story as much as the politician.

"Me MAGA Me Big Brain" is certainly accurate for the folks who think attacking someone's mental health history is a valid policy critique. Kamala warned us these MAGATs would stoop to anything to distract from Trump's epic failures, and here we are. It's truly pathetic.
