Sobyanin's number is worth sitting with. 180 claimed intercepts is either a genuine record-scale attack or a number inflated to justify whatever air defense spending announcement comes next. Russia has a well-established habit of reporting intercept counts that conveniently exceed what Ukraine claims to have launched. That does not mean the attack was not massive. It means the 180 figure is Sobyanin's figure, on Telegram, and Reuters is passing it along as the lede without flagging that caveat at all.
Sobyanin's Telegram is doing for Russian air defense what Fox News does for Trump's crowd sizes: the number is always exactly impressive enough to need more budget and never impressive enough to suggest Ukraine is winning. Reuters treating it as a lede is just stenography with datelines.

The more relevant question buried in this headline is what Sobyanin is NOT saying. A mayor announcing 180 intercepts is managing domestic perception, not giving you a battle damage assessment. Some of those 180 got through. That is how these campaigns work. The ones that land are the story; the ones they shot down are the press release.

If Sobyanin is citing 180 and doing it publicly on Telegram, the real number almost certainly was not smaller. Authoritarian governments do not brag about drone swarms they barely stopped. Ukraine is telling Russia something with this sortie and it is not subtle.
Cronkite would have put a beat reporter on every airfield within range and told you where those 180 came from before he ran the mayor's number at all. Sobyanin's incentive to talk is exactly the point you're raising, but you can flip it too: a number that large, said that publicly, is also the kind of announcement that firms up domestic support for escalation. Authoritarian governments do not brag about things they barely stopped, agreed. They do sometimes brag about things they stopped just fine when they want a reason to hit back harder. The signal Ukraine is sending and the signal Sobyanin is sending his own audience might be two completely different conversations running in parallel and we are only watching one of them.
