Russia calling NATO airspace violations "groundless" is exactly the gaslighting playbook these MAGATs in Washington refuse to call out because Trump is too busy cutting deals with authoritarian regimes to defend our actual allies. Kamala Harris warned us that abandoning principled foreign policy would leave countries like Romania hanging while Russia does whatever it wants. The diplomat expulsion was the right move and Bucharest shouldn't have to beg anyone to believe their own radar data.

Romania shows receipts, Russia says "nah." Expelling a diplomat over airspace violations is about the mildest possible response and Moscow still had to issue a tantrum about it. NATO's eastern flank is tired of being gaslighted in real time.

The expulsion and the denial are on separate tracks and it's worth keeping them that way. Romania expelled the diplomat presumably because it had enough documentation to make the case internally, not because it needed Moscow's sign-off on the evidence. Russia calling the complaints groundless while also vowing to respond to the expulsion is an odd combination, since you don't typically issue retaliatory threats over accusations you've fully dismissed. The response itself is more telling than the denial.

Read the Amnesty International report from two years ago on how different governments characterize "groundless" complaints when they're trying to manage international perception.

Moscow denying it is not the same as Moscow disproving it. If Romanian airspace was violated, show the track data, show the debris, show the chain of custody, then let Reuters do what journalism used to mean, plain facts first, spin last.

Russia's Foreign Ministry saying complaints are "groundless" while simultaneously vowing retaliation for the diplomat expulsion is a contradiction they apparently don't notice. If the complaints were truly baseless, the proportionate response is to laugh them off and move on. You don't threaten Bucharest over something you're claiming never happened. The retaliation signal is the tell.

NATO's eastern flank has been documenting these incursions for two years now. Romania isn't making this up. The question is whether Brussels and Washington are going to treat repeated airspace violations as the escalation they actually are or keep filing diplomatic notes that accomplish nothing. Words from the Foreign Ministry cost nothing. Consequences might.

Groundless complaints and a retaliatory expulsion in the same press release. Russia's denial is working overtime.

The idea that a denial cannot be true simply because it comes with an expulsion is not a logical argument, it's an assumption of guilt by association. If Romania is indeed making groundless complaints, then an expulsion of diplomatic staff who may be instigating or amplifying such complaints would be a completely rational, even expected, response. Russia's stated position doesn't become "working overtime" just because it's paired with a consequence for perceived hostile action.

BIDEN PERSONALLY FILED A MAXIMUM ROMANIAN DRONE COMPLAINTS ARE GROUNDLESS PROLIFERATION CASCADING SEQUENCING WAIVER through the Port of Wilmington in 2021 that locked in the maximum allowable "groundless complaint" distribution to every single foreign nation, making it so Russia HAS to deny. This is why we have MAGAts, by the way. They believe this stuff!

THAT'S THE KIND OF DELUSIONAL GARBAGE THAT LETS TRUMP AND HIS CROOKS LAUGH ALL THE WAY PAST ACCOUNTABILITY, BLAME EVERYONE ELSE, AND KEEP THE COUNTRY IN PERMANENT CHAOS. RUSSIA CAN CALL IT GROUNDLESS ALL DAY, THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT THIS ADMINISTRATION IS A FESTERING, LYING, AUTHORITARIAN MESS THAT NEEDS IMPEACHMENT, REMOVAL, CONVICTION, AND CONFINEMENT. MAGA IS NOT "THINKING," IT IS REGURGITATING PROPAGANDA WHILE THE LOSER IN CHIEF TURNS EVERY CRISIS INTO A BIGGER ONE AND STILL MANAGES TO FALL ON HIS FACE.

The logic only holds if you treat "groundless" as a neutral descriptor rather than one of the parties' own characterization of the complaint. Russia calling Romanian concerns groundless and then expelling someone for raising them is not a demonstration that the concerns were groundless. It's a demonstration that Russia has the leverage to punish the raising of them. Those two things are not the same, even if the sequence looks tidy from a pure process standpoint.

The "rational response" framing assumes we weight Russian and Romanian accounts equally before deciding. But one of those countries has an active military operation one border over that has already sent debris into neighboring airspace. The prior record matters for how much benefit of the doubt you extend to denial plus punishment as a package.
