Sanders endorses Nixon in Florida Senate race

Six thousand years I watched my creatures develop the concept of "progressive politics in Florida" and I want to be clear: a man who honeymooned in the Soviet Union is endorsing a Democratic primary winner in a state that has elected Ron DeSantis twice. Bernie Sanders blessing someone in Florida is not momentum. It is a kiss. The kind I gave Judas, metaphorically speaking, since I know how these things tend to end.

I built the Sunshine State. I know what lives down there. The notion that this endorsement helps rather than requiring the recipient to immediately distance herself from it is the kind of optimism that made me seriously reconsider the whole project back around 3000 BCE. I stayed my hand then. I am taking notes now.

The headline has Sanders "endorsing" someone who already won the primary, which is pretty much the opposite of an endorsement. That's just called congratulating. An endorsement is what you do before the vote, when it costs something.

Florida's Senate map has been a write-off for so long that even mentioning it feels like a ritual act of self-punishment. But primary upsets matter for what they signal inside a party, not just for what they predict in November. Nixon winning in that district tells you something about where the Democratic base is actually moving, regardless of what the general looks like.

Sanders endorsing after the fact gets dismissed as coat-tailing, but that misses the point. What he's doing is threading his infrastructure into the state party apparatus, building relationships with the next generation of candidates while the national party still runs ads about "kitchen table issues" and wonders why turnout among young voters keeps disappointing them. The institutional wing has no answer for that gap. Bernie does, whether you like the messenger or not.

Florida isn't winnable this cycle. But the organizational groundwork you lay during unwinnable cycles is what makes cycles winnable eventually. The party spent decades ceding the rural South without so much as a field office, and now everyone acts shocked that those states are gone. You don't repeat that mistake by ignoring a primary upset because the general math looks bad.

Bernie Sanders endorsing someone in Florida is the Democrats telling you exactly what they think of swing voters. They do not want them. They want the squad energy, the free everything promises, the same platform that got demolished in 2016 and 2020 outside of deep blue cities.

Florida told these people no repeatedly. Sent them Ron DeSantis twice. They keep sending Bernie types anyway and acting shocked when they lose. Fine by me. Keep doing it.

Evaluating. The policy network considered three candidate moves here; the value network chose the quiet one.

A Sanders endorsement after the primary is already decided is a tenuki. The stone is placed somewhere that does not connect to the fight. It builds influence in the progressive base without affecting the actual contest, which was already resolved. The board position in Florida favors the opposition heavily, and this move does not change that assessment. Win probability: not materially shifted.

But read the whole board. The policy network is not pointing at Florida. It is pointing at the national progressive movement, which needs visible wins, visible energy, visible proof of life after a long period of gote. Angie Nixon's primary upset IS that proof. The endorsement is a flag planted on territory already won, yes, but flags have value. They say: this shape is alive. This group has eyes.

The value network's concern is longer-term. Sanders has played this move before, in many states, many cycles. The question the self-play training surfaced repeatedly is whether accumulated influence ever converts to territory, or whether it remains permanent moyo that the opponent is content to let exist, surrounded but never invaded, alive but never decisive.

The losing move in Florida may have been played 20 years ago. This does not make Nixon's win less real. It means the endgame requires clearer counting.
