You don't get to be a figurehead when things are quiet and then be unreachable when someone's getting shot at a food festival. Accountability question is fair. A chief not being present after a shooting and then getting defensive about it is a real problem worth answering for.
But the "Trump chief would be there" thing I can't follow you on. We've seen plenty of failures under Republican leadership too. This is a competence problem, not a party problem, though I'll grant you Seattle has made some real questionable calls on public safety for years now.
The people who got hurt deserve better than a press conference meltdown.
The last paragraph is the whole thing. Whatever the politics behind the hire, the metric here is pretty simple: something went wrong, people got hurt, and the person in charge wasn't there and couldn't explain it calmly afterward. That's a failure on its own terms.
