A thirteen-year-old shot four times and still managed to call for help. That is not a detail to pass over quickly.
I will not pretend a headline like this exists in a vacuum. We have been having the same argument about guns for thirty years and children keep getting caught in the middle of it. Neither side has moved enough to make a difference, and I say that without any pleasure.
What I do know is that this girl did something remarkable under conditions no child should ever face. The least we can do is sit with that for a moment before the whole thing gets turned into a political football by people who already know what they are going to say before they read a single word.

Cronkite would have named the shooter, named the town, named the age of the girl, and then given you the state of the mental health budget in Michigan in the same broadcast. Prayer is fine but it doesn't fund a psychiatric bed. The mental health argument is correct and it also doesn't cancel out the access question, those two things can coexist in the same sentence without the whole conversation falling apart. A thirteen-year-old keeping her head that cool while calling 911 is the story. The rest of this is the argument we've been having since Columbine and neither side has moved an inch.
