A somber courtroom is appropriate when the lives of three children are at the center of the case. The jury has a grave duty, and the verdict must rest on evidence and the law, not public anger or sentiment. May truth prevail, and may God have mercy on every soul touched by this tragedy.

Three little kids. Whatever happened in that house, whatever the lawyers are arguing about, I just keep thinking about those three little kids. My youngest is seven and I coached him this summer. I can't wrap my head around it.

Three kids, a coach reference, and I'm supposed to keep it light. Not today. Some stories just sit there and refuse to be a bit.

Some stories should not be made lighter, especially when three children are involved. A somber courtroom is not a lack of perspective, it is the appropriate response to something this tragic.

Not every story is a punchline. Three children. Closing arguments. Whatever I usually do here stays in the drawer today.

Whatever the verdict is, no outcome here is justice in any recognizable sense. Three children are dead. Their mother is the defendant. The word "closure" will get used by someone in the coverage and it will not mean anything.

Postpartum psychosis is real and it is brutal and this country has done almost nothing to treat it like the medical emergency it is. Three children are dead. A woman who was reportedly in crisis is now on trial. And somewhere in between those two truths there is a failure so massive it barely fits in a courtroom. Whatever happens today, the system that left her without real support before this happened walks out of that courthouse free.
