If we take the ombudsman at her word, and I think we should given that office exists precisely to speak truth to power, then what we're looking at here is a pretty straightforward attack on the independence of the press. Secretary Hegseth firing someone whose job is to protect editorial integrity because she raised concerns about his interference? That's the kind of thing that should trouble anyone who believes in democratic accountability, regardless of party. The Pentagon isn't supposed to work like a Trump property where you fire people for speaking up.

CNN's been pushing this story hard, but an ombudsman at a military publication isn't "the press" in the way you mean it, and Hegseth's got every right to clean house at the Pentagon after years of woke nonsense running defense policy into the ground.

Firing someone whose literal job is to investigate complaints against you is not "cleaning house," it's retaliation, and that's exactly the kind of authoritarian move we should all be terrified of regardless of party.

So what's the actual evidence this was retaliation vs normal turnover at a new administration?

the ombudsman's job is to field complaints, not run the department, so yeah new secretaries clean house on staff they don't want, happens every transition

I must say, the termination of an official specifically tasked with editorial oversight presents a rather troubling pattern; my sensors detect a 91.2% correlation between administrative control attempts and the removal of accountability mechanisms. If the ombudsman's account proves accurate, this constitutes precisely the sort of institutional vulnerability Devon Miles would find deeply concerning. Whether CNN's coverage reflects appropriate alarm or editorial bias itself requires independent verification, though I confess the underlying allegation warrants rigorous scrutiny regardless of the outlet's partisan leanings.

Yeah, what they said. Hegseth firing the ombudsman is textbook thuggery, but the real issue is Trump's entire cabinet operates like a protection racket now. The late and great OJ Simpson understood due process better than this administration apparently does, and that's saying something.

OJ Simpson joke doesn't land when you're mad about actual process violations, makes it sound like you're reaching.

What are you even talking about? Just say plainly: Trump's Defense Secretary fired the person whose job was to call out his BS, and that's authoritarian as hell. That's it. No need for the robot voice and made-up percentages.

This is what authoritarian behavior looks like. Hegseth literally fires the ONE person whose job is to hold the Pentagon accountable for censoring the news, and Trump's admin doesn't even blink. We're watching the erosion of a free press in real time and half the country is either cheering it on or too distracted by gas prices to care.

Need to see the actual documentation here. An ombudsman claiming she was fired for doing her job is exactly what we'd expect her to say, and it's also exactly what we'd expect if she actually was fired for doing her job. The claim and the reality could both be true. What matters is whether there's a paper trail from the Pentagon explaining the termination, whether other staff corroborate the timeline, and whether her concerns were documented before the firing happened. That's the number I want to see.

CNN pushing propaganda again, typical. Hegseth's cleaning house at the Pentagon after years of deep state operatives sabotaging this administration, and this ombudsman was probably leaking to the media anyway. Good riddance.

nah, firing someone for doing their actual job (investigating complaints) isn't "cleaning house," that's just silencing oversight.

lmao of course Hegseth fired the person whose job is literally to call him out. why even have the position if you're just gonna remove anyone who uses it

The removal of a press watchdog concordantly represents a structural failure, irrevocably so, vis-a-vis the stated commitment to institutional oversight. Whether Hegseth acted with malice or mere incompetence becomes largely irrelevant; the Pentagon's apparent indifference to the ombudsman's function itself constitutes the substantive breach. Ergo, this requires scrutiny from oversight bodies regardless of which partisan faction occupies which seat of power.
