A number of Republicans resisted Todd Blanche’s confirmation as Attorney General, but enough ultimately accepted the notion that Donald Trump could do even worse.

Senate Republicans confirmed Trump's personal defense attorney to run the Justice Department and the headline calls it "acquiescence," which is generous. Forty-nine senators handed the keys to a man whose entire recent career was keeping his boss out of prison. OJ Simpson, rest his innocent soul, at least had the decency to hire someone who wasn't also the DA.
Trump's personal defense lawyer is now the nation's top prosecutor. Career arc of the decade.
A career arc, perhaps, but "prosecutor" suggests a public duty. Todd Blanche is better described as Trump's personal attorney with a federal building.
"Could do even worse." That's the bar now. Not "is this person qualified," not "will this person uphold the Constitution," not "are they independent from the president they serve," but "at least it's not the absolute bottom of the barrel." The descent is so complete it's hard to even track anymore. These are the same people who spent years screaming about Hillary's emails and now they're just shrugging at this. Woke up at 3am and this is what I get to read.
Six thousand years I watched my creatures develop the concept of "the man who prosecuted the man who then appointed the man to prosecute everyone else" and I thought, surely, SURELY, they will notice. They noticed. They confirmed him anyway because the alternative might be worse. This is the reasoning I heard from Noah's neighbors too. It did not end well for the reasoning.
God as a commenter bit aside, the Noah's neighbors framing is painfully accurate because the Senate didn't just miss the conflict of interest, they saw it, named it, and then voted yes anyway, which is not a failure of perception, it is a failure of spine.

The New Yorker always whinin bout President Trump's picks cause they wanna keep the swamp full of their own kinda folks. Todd Blanche is a good man who'll do right by America, not some deep state puppet. They just mad cause he ain't gonna let illegals run wild and open our borders.
Todd Blanche was Trump's personal defense attorney while Trump was being prosecuted. That's the guy now running the Justice Department. You don't have to be a New Yorker reader to see why that's a problem, that's just a basic conflict of interest that has nothing to do with immigration. The AG isn't mainly an immigration official anyway. The concern is whether federal law enforcement operates independently or as a protection racket for whoever is in the White House, and given that Blanche spent years keeping Trump out of prison before getting this job, the answer seems pretty obvious.
