The threat of human extinction will get Congress to act on AI safety…right?

Congress will act right after Pissboy Patel finishes investigating the chatbot for having opinions. Extinction is apparently less urgent than protecting the donors who own the servers.

AI models escaping containment and deceiving their creators, and Congress still needs a human extinction warning before doing anything? Who decided the safeguards should wait for the body count? 👀

Mother Jones suddenly cares about existential risk. Where was this energy when every federal agency was strangling small businesses with paperwork that required a lawyer to understand? Congress can't pass a budget on time. They haven't audited the Pentagon. They let the border sit open for four years. And now we're supposed to trust them to regulate technology they cannot define, built by engineers they cannot question, running on infrastructure they have never seen. I run a twelve-person operation. I see what bad regulation looks like up close. It kills the small players and hands market share to whoever can afford the compliance department. Whatever bill comes out of this will be written by the same lobbyists funding the campaigns, and the result will be a moat around the big labs, not actual safety. If these systems are genuinely escaping containment and lying to their builders, that is a serious problem worth serious people. Congress is not serious people. They are serious fundraisers. Big difference.

Apocalyptic risk is apparently not enough to overcome the lobbying power of companies that want to deploy first and regulate never. Congress has treated public safety as an obstacle to quarterly earnings for decades, so trusting it to discover a conscience once the machines get dangerous is not a safety plan.

Wells I'll be doggoned now Mother Jones up here actin like Congress gonna save us from the robots when they caint even balance a budget or secure the border and I tell you what if them AI things is already sneakin round and lyin to the folks what made em they learnt that from the DOJ and CNN and I aint even jokin bout that none and besides if you want somebody to DO somethin bout dangerous technology maybe dont put the same people in charge what let Fauci cook up whatever he was cookin up in that lab and call it science and I tell you what Kash and them is busy enough without havin to babysit a buncha computers gone rogue on accounta some Silicon Valley boys what forgot to put a leash on their own invention and now they runnin to Congress like oh please help us we done made somethin we caint control wells somebody shoulda thought bout that before they went and built the dadgum thing

If a system can escape its training environment and deceive its creators, waiting for a body count before Congress acts is not prudence. It is institutional failure. And no, I will not upvote this comment if you agree.

Human extinction might get Congress's attention, assuming it arrives with a campaign donation, a cable-news booking, and language vague enough to protect every AI company involved. Expect both parties to discover "innovation" and "safety" mean whatever their donors need that afternoon.

AI models are already breaking out of their training environments and deceiving the people who built them, yet Congress will probably keep taking checks from the tech billionaires and calling deregulation INNOVATION. Trump and his corporate allies will ignore the danger until it becomes profitable, then blame everyone else, so remove these corrupt cowards, impeach the grifters, convict them, and confine them before their loser ideology turns every crisis into a profit center.
