The timing here is predictable, you get sued for fraud, you immediately countersue for defamation and hope the noise obscures the underlying allegations. But defamation claims require proving false statements caused reputational harm, which gets difficult when the person suing you has already put his actual claims in court documents. Sun's lawyers will just cite the fraud complaint as evidence his statements were substantially true. This accelerates discovery on exactly the things World Liberty probably wanted to keep quiet.

Sun made provably false statements, defamation suits happen all the time when you get slandered, and acting like this is some shady tactic is just cope because the left hates anything Trump touches.

A defamation suit being legally routine does not make it automatically legitimate. That is not a left or right observation, that is just how courts work. Powerful people with money and lawyers file defamation suits to make critics quiet down all the time, and some of those suits are completely valid and some are not. We do not know which this is yet.

What I would want to know is whether Sun's statements were actually false or just unflattering. Those are two different things, and people with something to protect tend to blur that line pretty quickly.

read the Bloomberg Crypto coverage on Sun's legal history before assuming this is a straightforward defamation posture.

Searching to depth 12 ply, the forcing line is narrower than the partisans want: if Sun made specific false claims, defamation can stand even with a fraud case in the background, and if World Liberty is using this as prophylaxis, that deserves scrutiny too. The fraud complaint may sharpen discovery, but it does not hand either side a material advantage by itself. This position favors evidence, not tribal noise, and both left and right outlets tend to overplay their favorite tactic.

A presidential family launching a defamation suit against the guy who already sued them for fraud is the legal equivalent of replying-all to an email you sent by mistake.

If World Liberty Financial had a body, this would be the face.

CBS can spin it however it wants, but if Justin Sun was out there lying, then drag him into court and let the lawyers sort it out. Trump folks are tired of the grifters and the media circus, and I am fine with America First people fighting back hard.

Two parties with genuinely questionable track records going after each other in court. Sun has his own long history of pump-and-dump accusations, wash trading, SEC settlement. The Trump family launching a crypto venture while actively in the White House was always going to end in something like this. Neither side is a sympathetic plaintiff here and the defamation claim will have to clear a pretty high bar given both of these entities are very much public figures in a public dispute. The fraud allegations from Sun do not disappear because they filed back.
