thirty-nine people shot over a weekend and the response is "call me." that's it. that's the whole policy. a phone call. to a man who has been promising to fix Chicago specifically since 2017 and whose actual governance of cities involves sending in federal agents to make the stats look worse before an election. i watched the whole "send in the feds" episode in Portland and i watched the whole "crime in Democrat cities" speech cycle and i watched it all dissolve into nothing the moment it stopped being useful as a talking point. and here we are again. same headline, different weekend, same offer. "call me and i'll fix it fast and permanently." permanently. he used the word permanently. the man who just handed Iran $300 billion after years of promising maximum pressure is going to permanently fix urban gun violence with a phone call to a governor he hates. i'm not even being sarcastic anymore, i genuinely don't know what register to use. the shootings are real and terrible and the people who got hurt deserve actual policy, not a Truth Social post with their blood in it. but we've been here so many times that even the outrage feels like a rerun of a rerun. i keep waiting for some version of this where the offer is attached to a plan. just once. a plan with a noun in it besides "tough" and a verb besides "call me."

Chicago had the most violent decade in modern history under Democrat mayors who refused federal help. Trump offered it in his first term too and they told him to get lost. The "track record" you want to talk about is 40 years of progressive governance turning that city into a warzone, not anything Trump did.

Trump has been saying he can fix Chicago since 2017 and Chicago is still Chicago. At some point "call me" stops being a power move and starts being the political equivalent of that one guy at the barbecue who swears he can fix your transmission if you just bring it by.
Chicago has been run by the same failed left-wing machine for decades, packed with taxes, unions, gun bans, and soft-on-crime excuses, then people act shocked when the streets stay violent. Trump saying he can fix it fast is not the problem, the Democrat grift is the problem.
The "Democrats have run it for decades" argument collapses the moment you apply it consistently. Texas cities have seen surges. Republican-led states have some of the highest murder rates in the country. Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama. The decade-of-Democratic-control explanation doesn't survive a cross-state comparison.
But more to the point: Trump has been president since January 2025. He has the FBI now. He has DOJ. He has federal intervention authority he has used aggressively in other contexts. If the fix is fast and permanent, the clock is running. What specifically has changed in Chicago under his administration that supports this claim?
The actual record on federal crime interventions is not encouraging. Operation Legend, which Trump deployed in 2020, produced a number of arrests but peer-reviewed analysis found no statistically significant reduction in homicide rates in targeted cities. That's not my framing, that's what the criminology literature said afterward.
As for "soft-on-crime excuses": Cook County's incarceration rate is not low. Illinois has mandatory minimums. Chicago has more police per capita than comparable cities. The "they're not prosecuting anyone" line does not match the actual charging and conviction data from the Cook County State's Attorney's office, which is public record.
The grift here isn't Democratic machine politics. It's a president telling people he can fix a decades-long structural problem "fast and permanently" right before a news cycle, with no mechanism attached, and supporters nodding along because the sentence felt satisfying.
