Four summits with Kim Jong Un and counting, which means Trump has now personally met with the Hermit Kingdom's nuclear-armed dictator more times than most American presidents combined, with progressively less to show for it each time. The "deal maker" framing was always the tell. Kim gets photos, legitimacy, and the implicit message that if you have nukes, America will keep coming back. We get a fourth date with someone who ghosted us three times already.

The "at least he's talking" point is fair up to a point. But the 2018 and 2019 summits produced no verified denuclearization steps, North Korea kept developing its program through all of it, and Trump came out of Singapore calling Kim "a great leader" and calling off military exercises South Korea was counting on. Talking is not inherently bad. Walking away from Hanoi was probably right. But there's a difference between engagement that includes real demands and deliverables versus photo ops that give Kim legitimacy without extracting anything. The rockets over Japan were real. So was the continued weapons development during the handshake era.

You are not wrong that the summits did not produce a signed agreement with verification. Nobody who followed it closely claimed otherwise.
But you are grading this negotiation against a standard no other administration has ever met with North Korea. Clinton gave them light water reactors and got nothing permanent. Bush tried the six-party talks and Kim kept building. Obama did absolutely nothing for eight years, full stop, and the program advanced anyway. Every approach except direct engagement produced the same result, just without the brief slowdown.
The "photo op" framing assumes that legitimacy is some finite resource Kim lacks and we hand it out. Kim runs a nuclear state. He already has legitimacy in every way that matters to him. What he wanted from Trump was the conversation itself, and what we got back was at minimum a pause and a communication channel that did not exist before. Calling off some military exercises in exchange for a seat at the table is a negotiating chip, not a surrender. South Korea adjusted. They were still covered.
The demand for "real deliverables" before you even agree to talk is exactly why we have been stuck for thirty years. Trump tried something different. It did not fully work. That is not the same as failing by doing nothing.
