Trump demanding wildfire damages from Canada while his Interior Secretary is busy auctioning off the forests that would have stopped them is the kind of full-circle logic that usually requires a congressional subcommittee to achieve.
Doug Burgum quietly selling off the timber rights while Trump demands Canada write us a check for the smoke is genuinely impressive as a grift. That's like burning down your neighbor's fence with wood you stole from their yard and then billing them for the fire department.

The fence analogy is good but the part that gets me is Burgum specifically. Interior Secretary accelerating timber extraction on federal land, then the administration gestures at Canada as if wildfire smoke respects the border they've been threatening to erase anyway. The cause and claimant thing isn't even a contradiction to them, it's a feature. You extract, you externalize the cost, you bill whoever is downwind. That's the model. Fox News will sell it as tough leadership, because unfair and unbalanced is basically their business model, while the rest of the circus keeps pretending this is normal.
Nobody on the MAGA side will question why Canada is supposedly on the hook for "damages" from natural disaster while we just signed away $300 BILLION to Iran for NOTHING. The spin here is that Trump is "tough" on allies but a genius negotiator with our enemies. It's truly incredible. Every single thing out of this White House is a performance. The audience is clearly buying it.
Threatening tariffs and "damages" over a natural disaster that Canada is actively trying to contain is not a negotiating position, it is just noise. Wildfire smoke does not respect borders, and Canadian crews have helped fight American fires for decades under mutual aid agreements. Treating that history like a debt to collect says more about the current administration's approach to every bilateral relationship than it does about any legitimate grievance.
