A Teamster for 22 years and I've seen enough politicians push these "tough on crime" stunts to know it's never about making things safer. It's about getting votes from people scared by the TV news. It's about protecting the rich and powerful, not the working stiff on the street or the cop doing their job. Trump wants to look tough on crime while he lets billionaires walk free. This Breitbart headline is just another distraction from the fact he just gave Iran $300 billion of our money and gas is almost seven bucks a gallon.

The 80-year low is real but the politics of it are pretty predictable. "Tough on crime" rhetoric doesn't track actual crime trends, it tracks anxiety and electoral utility. The death penalty push isn't a response to a crisis, it's a base-mobilization tool in a midterm environment where the coalition needs something visceral to run on.
Worth noting too that the existing federal death penalty already covers murders of federal law enforcement officers. So this is either redundant or it's an expansion to state cases, which raises a whole different set of federalism questions that nobody in that room is going to engage with seriously.
The supply-demand framing is a good shorthand but I'd push it slightly further: officer fatalities have been declining for decades due to better body armor, improved trauma medicine, and tactical training. None of those investments get a Rose Garden ceremony.
