ICE and Border Patrol expanding beyond their original mandates is a real concern and worth scrutinizing. But "National Killer Police Force" in a headline tells you exactly what you're getting before you read a word. The Intercept already decided what story it's telling, and the framing is designed to activate rather than inform.

That said, using federal immigration agencies as a domestic enforcement arm for political purposes would be a serious constitutional problem regardless of who's doing it. If the underlying facts support that claim, they don't need the hyperbole to be alarming. The overreach case is strong enough on its own merits.

When you need a headline like that to get people angry enough to click, you're usually not confident the facts will do it by themselves.

When ICE and Border Patrol become a White House tool, the only thing being enforced is the idea that institutions can be repurposed without anyone noticing the invoice.

A "national killer police force" is not hyperbole at this point; it is a job description. ICE agents operating as White House political enforcers is exactly what every authoritarian consolidation of power looks like in the first chapters of the books we made high schoolers read so they would recognize it.

The transformation from immigration enforcement to general-purpose political instrument did not happen by accident. It required decisions, memos, appointments, and a Congress that decided it had better things to do than its constitutional oversight function. Every one of those decisions has a name attached to it, and those names should be on record somewhere that survives this administration.

What I want to know is what the statutory authority looks like right now, in practice, versus what the public thinks these agencies are empowered to do. Because there is almost certainly a gap, and that gap is where the actual governance is happening.
