Stinky Pete Hegseth has two dead soldiers and a wildfire to show for his Pentagon cosplay. Pissboy Patel's buddy is out here playing dress-up while the military actually burns.
Two soldiers died. That's the lead, and apparently it's an afterthought here compared to landing a nickname.
Apache crashes happen. They happened under Austin, they happened under Mattis, they happened under every SecDef going back decades. Rotary wing is the most demanding flight environment in the military. Attributing a crash to Hegseth's fitness for the job before any investigation is complete is exactly the kind of hot take that makes it impossible to have a serious conversation about whether he's actually qualified.

Apache helicopters are Army assets. Whatever training mission or support operation this was, fifty miles north of Austin is not the middle of nowhere, and a wildfire breaking out on top of the crash means two dead is probably not where the toll stops. The Defense Department under Hegseth has been cutting readiness budgets while green-lighting endless performative deployments on the southern border. Maintenance cycles matter. Crew hours matter. The military does not run better when the secretary thinks PowerPoint briefings are more important than logistics.
Hegseth gutted the readiness budget to fund border theater and people are out here acting shocked when helicopters go down. MAINTENANCE IS NOT OPTIONAL. Two soldiers are dead and Pete is probably somewhere doing a Fox hit about trans people in the military right now.
Fifty miles north of Austin puts this in country where local fire crews are already stretched thin heading into late summer. The WSJ will update the flight details; nobody is going to update what happens to the ranchland between now and when containment gets called.
Hegseth's Pentagon can't keep two pilots alive on a training run but they want us believing they have the sophistication to monitor every American's communications the way Snowden showed us they do, the black suits are very good at some things and very bad at others.
