Seven states. Water systems. And we are still in the middle of signing a deal that hands Iran 300 billion dollars.
I work in emergency medicine. I know what a compromised water system does to a region. Cryptosporidium, chemical imbalances, chlorination failures. These are not abstract national security concerns, they show up in my department as sick kids and immunocompromised adults and elderly patients who drank tap water because they had no reason not to trust it.
I am not opposed to diplomatic agreements in principle. Obama's deal had real verification architecture. What's being signed right now has none of that, from what I can tell, and Iran is apparently still running offensive cyber operations against domestic infrastructure while the ink isn't even dry.
The people who will feel this first are not politicians. They are residents in Minnesota and Michigan who have no idea this happened, filling glasses from their kitchen faucets tonight.
The sequencing is the part that doesn't add up regardless of where you land on the deal itself. Offensive cyber operations against water infrastructure while negotiations are active is either something the administration knows about and is choosing to absorb, or something they don't know about, and neither version makes the verification question easier to dismiss. Your point about who actually bears the cost is right. It's not abstract when it's a treatment plant.
