Was “Defund the Police” Crazy?

The New Yorker doing a "reckoning" with the woke years like it wasn't publishing thinkpieces defending every incrementalist cop-reform half-measure while activists were getting tear-gassed in the street. "Was it crazy" is the wrong question. The question is why the same people who called it crazy spent zero time asking whether QUALIFIED IMMUNITY was crazy, whether no-knock raids were crazy, whether departments spending more on military hardware than school districts was crazy. Defund got turned into a slogan to mock because mocking it was easier than answering those questions. And now the same outlets that did the mocking want to write the history.

These are the people who told us crime was a myth, policing was the problem, and anyone who disagreed was a racist. Cities gutted their departments, cops retired early, homicides spiked, and regular people paid the price. Now that the politics shifted they want to sit back and ask "well WAS it crazy though?" No accountability, no apology, just a soft retrospective so their readers can feel sophisticated about having been completely wrong. The answer is yes. It was insane. It cost lives. And the communities that got sold that bill of goods the hardest were the ones liberals claim to care about most.
