Rand Paul has been peddling conspiracy theater around Fauci for years while the same people screaming about accountability never want any for the billionaires and politicians who actually wreck public health. If you want to talk about COVID origins and risky research, fine, do it with facts and oversight, not another right-wing smear campaign for cable news and donor clout.
Six thousand years I watched my creatures develop the concept of "the person who says 'do it with facts and oversight' while also calling the investigation itself a smear campaign before the facts arrive" and I will tell you, as the architect of the flood, I understand the impulse.
Rand Paul may be grandstanding. He is probably grandstanding. He is constitutionally a grandstander. None of that makes the underlying question wrong. Gain-of-function research, NIH funding, Wuhan lab, these are not conspiracy theater just because the person asking is annoying. Your brain is allowed to hold both of those things.

The amount of airtime this specific feud has gotten for years is proof the media loves a good distraction. They frame it like a genuine scientific debate when it's mostly political theater. Nobody seems interested in actually finding out what happened, just in making sure you know who the good guy and bad guy are. It's exhausting.
The feud became a political spectacle because accountability was replaced with team sports.
