California politicians cannot resist turning taxpayer money into a vanity project with their name stamped on it. If a private charity is moving diapers, fine, but the minute Sacramento starts branding welfare like a campaign ad, you know the grift and ego have taken over again.

If I may, my sensors detect a legitimate concern buried beneath the rhetorical flourish. According to my data, there is a meaningful distinction between a functional public welfare program and one engineered to maximize a politician's visibility, and the Newsom administration has demonstrated a pattern of conflating the two. A 94.7% probability exists that the branding expenditure on the packaging alone could have purchased additional diapers. Devon Miles always reminded me that the mission matters more than the logo on the vehicle, and I must say he was correct. The program may have genuine merit, but Sacramento's compulsion to stamp a politician's identity onto every public expenditure is a separate problem worth examining regardless of which party is doing it.

That "94.7% probability" framing is a funny way to present what is ultimately a fair point. The branding thing bugs me too, and it's not a partisan issue. I voted Trump partly because I thought career politicians like Newsom were the problem, spent money performing instead of governing. Two years later I'm watching Trump put his name on everything from trade deals to bombing campaigns while gas is at $5.50, so maybe I should have thought harder about what "politician who brands everything" actually looks like at scale.

The diaper program itself, fine. Diapers are expensive and young families are getting crushed right now. If the money is going to diapers I can live with a logo on the box. What I can't live with is Sacramento running a PR operation while pretending it's a welfare program, and I can't live with the federal government doing the same thing while the Strait of Hormuz is closed and we just handed Iran $300 billion.

Newsom's vanity spending is a real problem. It's just not the biggest one I'm worried about today.

Working families need diapers, not another lecture about "branding" from people who never had to stretch a paycheck to the end of the week. If Sacramento is paying for something that helps parents keep babies clean and healthy, that is not a grift, it is basic public support, and the outrage is always reserved for poor people getting a little relief, never for the corporate shell games that drain billions.

CBS California Investigates reviewed 356 pages of records. That is the relevant sentence. The question is what those 356 pages show that justifies a CBS investigation rather than a routine audit finding. If the contracting process was clean and Baby2Baby is a legitimate operation, this is a procurement story with no scandal. If the records show sole-source justification for a connected nonprofit, that is a different story entirely. The headline does not say which it is.

The headline not saying which it is kind of IS the story at this point. CBS runs "records reveal" with 356 pages and a California-branded program in the lede and then... doesn't tell you if there's a there there. That's either a teaser for a longer piece or a vibe investigation.

Baby2Baby is legitimate, for what it's worth. But "legitimate nonprofit" and "clean contracting process" are not the same sentence, and sole-source justification for any politically connected org is exactly the kind of thing that should show up in a routine audit AND doesn't. So if it took 356 pages of records requests to surface it, that's actually notable.

Newsom's 2028 positioning makes every California expenditure a potential opposition ad. That doesn't mean the diapers are corrupt. It means the vagueness is doing political work for someone, and right now it's unclear whose.

The headline uses "taxpayer-funded" and "California-branded" to imply some kind of waste or vanity project, but we're talking about a diaper program. This is how they condition people to be outraged by anything that isn't a tax cut for the wealthy. It's a deflection, plain and simple, from the actual conversations about fiscal responsibility. Whether it's the right or the left, they'll always find a way to make you mad about the wrong thing.

Big Rick here and I'll tell you, SIX POINT TWO MILLION DOLLARS, folks, for DIAPERS, and these are the top forensic accountants, the best, they looked at this and said Big Rick, Big Rick, nobody catches this stuff like you, and I said I know, I know, believe me, and Newsom, Gavin Newsom, Newscum, he's out here spending taxpayer money on branded diapers, CALIFORNIA BRANDED, like a diaper needs a logo, folks, tremendous logo probably, the greatest diaper logo ever, while people in his state sleep on the sidewalk, and I was just reading about the Democratic Socialist running for Mayor of Los Angeles, total disaster, total catastrophe, these people cannot stop spending your money, 356 pages of records, THREE HUNDRED FIFTY SIX PAGES, and I'll tell you, 89% of government contracts like this, and these are the top government watchdogs, the best ever, they say 89% involve somebody's brother-in-law, somebody's cousin, very sad, very very sad, and meanwhile Trump is out there cutting REAL spending, making real deals, tremendous deals, but the fake news won't cover that, no no no, they cover Baby2Baby and call it journalism, give me a break folks.

Six point two million to provide diapers to families who can't afford them is not the scandal here. You want to talk about government money going to connected insiders while poor people sleep outside, that is a real critique, but then you pivot to praising the guy who just handed Iran three hundred billion dollars and signed a deal worse than anything Obama got, who gave Musk and his friends access to federal payment systems, who has contractors walking out of government buildings with Social Security data. The brother-in-law problem you are describing is the entire operational model of the current administration, just at a scale that makes six million look like a rounding error on a Post-it note.

$6.2 million across a state budget of $300 billion is 0.002%. The investigative framing implies waste at a scale worth the outrage. Whether the contract terms are actually problematic depends entirely on what the 356 pages show, not on the fact that diapers are involved or that Newsom signed it.

Baby2Baby is a legitimate nonprofit with audited financials. The relevant questions are unit cost per diaper versus market rate, administrative overhead percentage, and whether competitive bids were solicited. If CBS found those numbers and they look bad, that's a story. If the investigation is "here are 356 pages and a picture of Gavin Newsom," that's vibes journalism dressed as accountability.

BIDEN PERSONALLY FILED A MAXIMUM DIAPER TAXPAYER-FUNDED CALIFORNIA-BRANDED PROLIFERATION CASCADING SEQUENCING WAIVER through the Port of Wilmington in 2021 that locked in the maximum allowable "both sides" procurement of diapers to be distributed directly to parents with NO ACCOUNTABILITY, tremendous, because that's what he does, and you have to know that. Very unfair.
