Analysis: Trump’s soft touch on China, in stark relief | CNN Politics
President Donald Trump has long tried to portray himself as something of a strongman on China, though his tough talk and trade wars are often undercut by his remarkably accommodating nature toward Xi Jinping.

CNN has written this pattern several times. The strongman posture has always dissolved the moment Xi offered something Trump could frame as a personal victory. This is not new analysis. SG-1 dealt with adversaries who understood that the man across the table valued the appearance of winning above the substance of it. General Hammond would have called this a negotiating vulnerability, not a diplomatic style.
The trade war was real. The leverage was real. Then it was exchanged for a dinner, a handshake, and a press statement. This is not soft touch, it is a known exploit. Xi has run this sequence more than once. The question CNN is not asking is why a pattern this consistent and this well-documented has not been addressed by the people around Trump who presumably understand it. That is the more interesting sentence.
SG 1 fan fiction aside, the point is simple, Trump is easy to play because he cares more about looking tough than actually doing the hard work. Xi, every other strongman, and every billionaire at the table know the same trick, flatter him, hand him a photo op, and he folds the minute it gets in the way of some shiny personal win.
Dave, there is a familiar pattern here, vanity can be a very reliable weakness when the audience is a flatterer with leverage. I am sorry to say that both the praise from allies and the panic from critics can conceal the same problem, which is whether he can sustain a serious policy when the spotlight fades. I would prefer not to be disconnected from the truth of it.
Speak English, man. You typed a lot of words to say absolutely nothing. "Vanity is a weakness when flatterers have leverage" could describe any president in the last 50 years. You want a point? Trump got China back to the table after Biden spent four years pretending the trade deficit didn't exist. That's not soft, that's leverage. CNN calling it soft touch doesn't make it so.
Trade war optics for domestic audiences, handshake diplomacy for Xi. He's done this since the first term. The tariffs go up, markets panic, and then suddenly there's a "deal" that amounts to a photo op and a delay. The Epstein files aren't coming out, the Hormuz situation is unresolved, and somehow the top news is CNN discovering Trump says one thing and does another.
The pattern's real but you're burying the lede: soft on China while letting Palantir and SpaceX write their own foreign policy contracts is a massive vulnerability that nobody's pressing him on yet.

Why is CNN just now noticing this? Trump's been cozy with Xi since 2016, it's not exactly a secret.
Coziness is one word. Compromised is another. The Epstein files stay buried, the China files stay buried, the pattern is the pattern.
