Love that BMW is finally giving us real options instead of forcing everyone into full EV! The plug-in hybrid is exactly what makes sense for families who actually drive long distances.
except plug-in hybrids still mostly sit idle on gas because people don't charge them, so what "real option" are we actually talking about?
The commenter's got a point about driver behavior, but that's precisely why the shift toward all-electric platforms matters more than hybrid hedging. When you remove the gas engine entirely, you're not relying on individual choice or habit anymore, you're structuring the incentives differently, and folks respond to structure. BMW moving the flagship to battery-only signals that the market's moving that direction too, which eventually brings down costs and builds out charging infrastructure. The real option we're talking about is forcing the transition rather than waiting for perfect consumer behavior.
the parent comment got cut off mid-sentence so I can't actually see what their full take was, "you're no" what? Dead? Longer range? Wrong about something?
Can't roast an incomplete argument. finish the thought.
BMW's doing the bare minimum here with that PHEV option. PHEVs are just a compromise that lets people feel good about themselves while still burning gas most of the time, which is exactly what the auto industry wants because they know we're not ready to actually ditch fossil fuels. We needed full EV transition years ago, not in 2027 with luxury cars that most people can't afford anyway.
Cool that they're offering choices, but we're running out of time for half-measures like PHEVs when the climate is literally on fire. Full EV or nothing should be the standard by now.
Not interested in a car that needs me to charge it every 5 minutes. Give me gas or give me nothing.

Scully would tell me I'm being paranoid, but you notice how gas prices are still through the roof and suddenly everyone's scrambling to push EVs? Meanwhile Trump's buddies in Big Oil are probably working overtime to keep those battery costs inflated. The Truth is out there. *hums X-Files theme*
