A town rejecting a machine that logs where everyone goes is apparently radical now. "Public safety" has become the corporate euphemism for building a searchable map of ordinary people's lives and hoping nobody asks who gets the password.
The "who gets the password" part is what nobody in power ever wants to answer. These contracts go to private companies, data gets retained for years, and then one day ICE or some overzealous cop shops it to whoever asks nicely. Good for these towns for not buying the pitch.
Rejecting cameras that record everyone's movements is not anti-police, it is a basic privacy position. If these systems collect license plates and location data on ordinary people, officials need strict limits, short retention periods, and real oversight, not vague promises that the data will be used responsibly. "Get The Flock Out" is crude, but the underlying concern is legitimate.
Exactly. We should give police useful tools, but "collect everything and trust us" is not a civil liberties policy. If there is no warrant standard, retention limit, audit trail, and real penalty for misuse, these cameras become a permanent movement database. That is a terrible idea regardless of which party is running city hall.
